The Bottom Line Shop around and, if it's used, get a good inspection.
I know that at 26 I'm too young to be an RV enthusiast but I've recently caught the bug. My partner and I travel quite a bit and we have often wondered how much money renting an RV would save us on hotel and food costs. Let me tell you, it won't!! Renting a small RV for a week will cost upwards of $2300.00 not including spending $100.00 on gas every time you fill the tank.(and you will be filling them often!) Well, about two weeks ago, while looking around at a car lot to purchase a second vehicle for our household, we came across an RV for sale. The friends that we were with were actually the ones who were interested (they are almost 20 years older than we are). We looked at the vehicle and went on our way. Once we were home we all started talking about buying an RV and it seemed that all of us were rather interested, and it would be cheaper to split the costs. I guess that is when the bug bit us. We found a few in the paper and called around and finally found one we were remotely interested in. It was a 1979 Champion. At 26 feet it sleeps eight and has quite a bit of living space. This old home was in pretty good condition, most of it's parts were new, and it only had 70k miles. The best part was the price. We talked the guy down to $2500 and are now the proud owners of a HUGE RV. We have only had it for a few weeks but it has been a blast so far!! For under $100 we have put in new Berber carpet, recovered all of the cushions, couches, and chairs, and have had it fully inspected. We are now ready to roll for the same price it would have been to RENT one of these babies for a week. Can't beat that!
