The Bottom Line Watch your minute rates and don't get hooked into a long term contract if you live on a budget.
It's a proven fact that 90% of Americans are two paychecks away from bankruptcy. If you are among that 90% then the idea of getting into a long term contract which means you are in a financial comitment for the duration, whether you can afford it or not. Like most people in the world today, I need a cell phone, for one reason or another, almost daily. Let's face it, it makes life alot easier. However, I didn't want to get hooked into a contract that required that I pay upwards of $40 a month for minutes that i don't even use. So prepaid was the way to go. Through Powertel I bought the newest phone on the market(at the time) for $50 and didn't have to go through a credit check or sign a contract. I pay a minimum of $10 a month for 30 minutes of service, I have no long distance charges for any calls, free voice mail, call waiting, caller ID, speed dialing, e-mail features, and the service area is huge. Also, I have only had the phone for a year and a half and they have given me over $100 worth of minutes free just for being a customer. I think that is pretty great. But, the best thing in my opinion, is the fact that if I don't want to buy any minutes this month, I don't have to. So, if you live on a budget, and most of us do, this is a great plan for you. I understand that prepaid plans are offered almost everywhere. Just be sure to look at how much your calls are costing per minute. I wouldn't pay over 35 cents.
