The Bottom Line Be prepared when you travel, no matter how far, and you will be much safer.
What you take with you on a trip, long or short, should in most ways be a smaller version of those things you keep at home. Let me share my thoughts with you on this important subject! Every time we get ready to go for a trip, I always pack the same basic items that might be needed if you get sick at home. Also, make sure your shots are up to date. I have a great little travel medicine kit that always goes with me, regardless. However, there is one thing that many people over look, and that is the following. What shots should I get? Well, first of all in general terms, you should have the same shots that you would normally have if you never left home. One that many people over-look is the Hepatitis A shot. This is not to be confused with Hepatitis B, which is more likely transmitted by blood and other body fluids. You know the sex stuff. Hepatitis is not just in foreign countries, but can be at your local favorite restaurant right here in middle America. I remember recently seeing a restaurant in St Louis that had an outbreak, so again......you don't need to leave home, go get your Hep A shot. You will need two shots, and they should be about 6 months apart. It is known that you are protected for at least 10 years and maybe more. We also had Typhoid, and made sure everything else was up to date. When you take prescription medications, make sure they are in the original bottle from the pharmacy. If you take anything that might be questioned by a foreign customs, just have a note from you doctor that you carry with you. You should have no problems. Since I am a diabetic, I have a note in my diabetic kit (even though I do not take insulin )that is on a prescription pad stating why I am carry needle like things. Although no one has ask, it a good idea to cover all your bases. I received a really neat travel first aid kit from drugstore.com that had all kinds of sample size items. It is full of band aids, assorted non-prescription items like, anti-itch creme, aspirin, and the list goes on. When ever I get more sample items, I ditch them in this little case and they are there, ready to go. It also contains assorted bandages, tape, and sissors. If you are traveling by ship, there is always a medical doctor on board. They are not cheap, and do not take your insurance. However, be sure and get a receipt and send it in to your company when you get home. From a total of 10 cruises, we have seen a doctor three times. Once my husband had a grain of sand in his eye in Tahiti, and I picked up the usual upper chest infection twice. If you are traveling by land, your hotel can usually connect you to medical attention. It is unlikely you will get ill on your trip. However, when your get a bug bite, etc, it is much easier if you have all those little things with you. I remember trying to find cough syrup in Buenos Aires. Fortunately, the front desk staff was so helpful, that they went to a drugstore, and when I went back to the room, a bottle was sitting on the desk. They didn't even charge me. Again......most important.....Please get the Hep A shot, it won't be in your first aid kit, but you will have possibly save serious problems! And as usual.........have a safe and pleasant trip. |
