Top Five for Writing a Good Review

May 01 '01

The Bottom Line In conclusion before you start writing a review, stop and think to yourself are you really prepared?

What makes a Good Review?

Writing a review on any given topic may seem like an easy job, but it really isn’t. There so many things that need to considered and included. I have put together what I considered to be the top five for a good review.

5- Good writing skills: Nothing is any worse than reading something with a million spelling, grammar and language mistakes. It shows nothing but ill literacy and a lack of professionalism. In other words no one is going to bother to read what you have reviewed and if they do they probably will not take what you have said seriously.

4- Well organized information and details- No one wants to read something that doesn’t make any sense. The information must be precise, accurate and of course in detail. It must contain every thing about what is being reviewed. For example if you are writing a review about a candy bar, just like anything else it must consisted of the four W’s (don’t forget “how”) who, what when, how and why? If any of these are missing you pretty much have a review that sucks (no offense.)

3- Honesty- A well-written review should contain pure honesty. It shouldn’t seem like you are making a sale pitch to earn some fast cash. It should seem like you are trying to help and offer important information to an individual. The review should contain all the pos and cons (especially the cons) that it (people, places or things) it contains. At the same time the facts should not be altered or changed to make the review sound and look
better.

2- Creativity and Humor: With these two things you can’t go wrong. That is unless you go about it the wrong way, such as being overbearing with the creativity and the humor. That may cause people to say the words “huh, what are you talking about?” And you don’t want that do you? Good humor is another plus, it just makes the review interesting and keeps the audience in tuned with what is being reviewed.

1- Back ground research: Know everything there is to know about what you are reviewing. Nothing is worse than having your reader know more about the person, place or thing you are reviewing. Know true facts and not just what he said she said.

**Bonus**Just a little tip: The limitations for reviews just based on opinions and facts are endless. Think about the reader when they read a review based on someone’s personal opinions that are completely different from theirs (duh, no one shares the same opinions.) In other words it should not simply state your opinion of why you don’t like it but why they might not like it or in vice versa. Remember you are writing a review for the public not for yourself.
