Career Builder is one of the many job search websites I have employed while trying to find a job. Like most employment websites, Career Builder has good and bad features.
In my opinion, the most impressive feature of this site is the resume builder. Career Builder allows job seekers a few options when submitting his/her resume. The easiest method is to simply upload the resume from the hard drive. Those extremely organized individuals who know the location of their resume can type in the location. For the rest of us, there is a browse feature, similar to the browse feature used when uploading documents to attach to e-mail. I used this method, and had no difficulty. In addition, users may also either cut and paste their resume from another program or type it in. Career Builder is unique in that it allows users to format their resume with easy to use buttons that resemble Microsoft Word. Users are able to format the font and font size, as well as bold, italics, underline, bullets, and centering options. In my experience, most sites require users to format with html.
Career Builder also allows users to store up to 5 versions of their resume. However, only one version may be active at a time. Each resume must be named, in order to distinguish between the versions.
I also like the search agent on Career Builder. Users are allowed to create up to five personal search agents that will perform ongoing searches and notify, via e-mail, when jobs are found that fit the criteria outlined in the search agent. My personal search agents have continued to e-mail me when they find jobs that fit my needs.
There are also a few things that I do not like about Career Builder. First and most importantly, I have yet to be contacted by a potential employer, although my resume has been posted for six weeks. This frustrates me, since I took the time to upload my resume and create an account.
I also dislike that Career Builder does not keep statistics on the number of times my resume has been viewed. Some job search sites keep stats of employer views, and searches that turned up the resume. So, in addition to no employer contacts, I do not even know if my resume has been looked at.
The aforementioned pros and cons are those characteristics of the website that directly affect me. However, there are a few other features that I believe to be noteworthy. First, Career Builder has blocking ability. Job seekers can block up to twenty companies from viewing their resume and information. This feature is especially helpful for those fortunate individuals who are currently employed, but like to keep their options open without their boss finding out about it.
Another nice feature, which I have yet to use because I have no job leads, allows users to store up to twenty job leads. I can only surmise that this would be a handy feature for all those people who are swamped with relevant job leads in their search agent e-mails.
Overall, I think that Career Builder has a decent website. Their resume builder is easier to use than most sites, and the blocking and job lead features are somewhat unique. However, the purpose of the website is to provide job seekers the opportunity for possible employment. Career Builder has not delivered any possibilities for employment to me. In all fairness, I must admit that my field (health care) is not the most technologically advanced, and there may not be many employers searching on the internet.
I would recommend this site to others who are placing their resume on many other sites. However, if I were only using one or two sites, Career Builder would not be my choice. I would especially encourage other health care professionals to look elsewhere, since I have been quite unsuccessful here.
