Sushi Express---DC's Secret Deal

The Bottom Line Don't share this secret unless you have to...

As it grows more and more "hip", sushi has become a greater and greater hassle. Crowds and lines in sushi lunch-sites have exploded in size, and that's driven prices up to prohibitively high levels in most restaurants.

Lucky for me, I've got a great place in my neighborhood where I can escape for delicious no-frills sushi...Sushi Express.

With low prices (most lunch dishes range from $6-9) and high quality, you can't resist this little hole in the wall. And my favorite part? The friendly family that runs the joint, always friendly and ready to serve regular customers their favorite dishes without ordering.

The Dishes:

Super Combo--For those who are looking to fill up big-time during lunch, and you know who you are, the Super Combo is a fantastic deal. With six California rolls, six tuna rolls and six cucumber rolls, there's about 2 pounds of delicious and quick sushi to this platter.

The best part? A $7.00 pricetag!

Executive Sushi--Probably the most popular sushi lunch, at $8.95, this combo comes with 8 pieces of sashimi served on a bed of daikon radish. The plate comes accompanied with a big bowl of white rice and a small cup of miso soup. Perfect!

Shrimp Tempura--Crisp and sweet tempura batter contrasted with salty and gentle shrimp, these little guys are a work of art. On top of the generously sized shrimp, the platter also includes tempura-fried vegetables, including yam (or is that swete potato, I never remember).

For those who prefer it, an entirely veggie tempura plate is available.

Edamame--A special treat that Sushi Express carries for a few days each month, edamame are a type of green bean served in the shell, having been boiled. Lightly salted and incredible fresh, they are a light and refreshing touch either before or after a sushi meal.

The Secret Leaks...

The one downside is that as time ticks down, Sushi Express' secret status grows less and less secure. Since I first started eating here six months ago, I've seen the lunch crown almost double.

What's that mean for you, the newly initiated? Get there while the getting is good!
