A day in the life of day care...

The Bottom Line I recommend that you look at as many places as possible, ask as many questions as possible. You want and need the best place for your child to be.

My favorite topic to write about is day care. I have been a provider for almost 7 months. I currently have 2 children of my own, ages 6 and 8; and watch up to 5 other children-currently their ages range from 4 month to 7 years old. The children I watch all come part time...and there is always a mixture of different ages, personalities and moods..all at the same time. Not one day is the same as the other. It is the most difficult job I have ever had...it is also the most rewarding. When all of the kids leave at the end of the day, I sit quietly for a few minutes and think.."was it a good day." All of the kids go home home safe and clean...but did they have fun?

Why is this so important? I feel very strongly that I am dealing with little kids here. That there are so many things that children must do and must go through, that a day care center is a place to play, to be nurtured. It is place where there are rules (play nice, hold hands, etc.); and a place where there is a schedule (meal time, nap time, drop off time, pick up time, etc). It is also a place where kids should have a great time, and where parents should have the comfort in knowing that their kids are having fun.

I write a monthly newsletter to the day care parents, and I would like to share with you a portion of the letter...it talks about what the kids do all day, and a few precautions that I take now that spring is coming!

"The weather is getting nicer!!!! And we will be outside a lot more often. Please remember to have your child bring a hat, to avoid the sun in his/her eyes (if they will wear it :) )...also, if you want me to put sunblock on your
child, please bring it, label it, and write down any instructions (ie..avoid face, put on how often, etc). Also, if you want your child to wear bug
spray, please do the same. Thank you!

You drop off your child and what do they do all day? Here's some things.
We walk...as often as we can!
Go on the porch: watch cars, trucks, planes, sing songs, snack, talk,
relax, read
We eat! The favorite snack of choice is pretzels and saltines. We
play at the table, sing, bang, talk...and yes, eat. Each child has different
preferences. From applesauce to lollipops to pasta to peaches...the kids
love to eat
We watch videos...well, not really watch...we dance with the videos..
the favorite being "The Wiggles"...an Australian group who sing and
dance...as the kids do the same with them.
We dance. Kim (name changed: my daughter) wants to have a recital with the day care kids...all can
participate...whether dancing in their hi chair, exersaucer, or even on the
floor...she has them going! More on this on a future date.
We read a lot. The kids love the board books, play a sound books (they
take turns pushing the buttons...even the babies) and the lift and look
books (Spot books being the favorite in this category).
We play. From cars bombing all around the house to tea parties and
blocks. From dress up to puzzles. From banging balls to playing
catch. We play a lot.
We do arts and crafts. Sometimes it is a simple as a few scribbles on
a piece of paper, to cutting and glueing, to painting and folding. The kids
love it all.
We listen to music...all the time!
We rest. Our quiet time is after lunch...between 12 and 2, depending on
the day. If a child is not napping, he/she is playing quietly.
We make friends."

I speak to many providers, all of the time. This is what most of us do. We have your child for a short day, or a long day. They come once a week or even 5 times a week. You go to work and are so tired when you come home...

I want you to know, that if you have 'done your homework,' and found a good day care center or home, for your child to be, that they have fun. That most providers give a warm, loving, secure...fun setting...for your child.

I have written several article on this subject...and feel that day care can be a wonderful place for your child. That you as a parent, if you choose to use day care, must work hard to find a good center or home. And that once you do, you will find your child clean, safe and happy.

And, lastly, I cannot stress enough (as I do in most articles I write on this topic),to please remember, that this is your child, and you may ask the provider anything, and show up any time..and when you do, should get an honest response and be happy as to what you see. I can also assure you that most providers to a wonderful job...and that if you see your child is happy, that they are in a good, healthy, loving environment. That day care can be a great place to be.
