Have one fitted just for you

The Bottom Line This one set of braces lasted me through 2 years of high school, 2 years of college and many years of softball after that. Just wash them and keep playing.
When I was in high school,(I'm not saying how long ago that was), I played basketball, ran track and was a cheerleader with no problems with my ankles. For some reason my junior year in school I began twisting my ankles during almost every basketball game which, of course was interfering with all my other activities. After countless trips to my doctor, he suggested having an ankle brace made to fit me and my special needs. I didn't want to stop my activities, especially basketball, but I couldn't continue the way I was going. My father even threatened to make me stop playing if I continued to hurt myself.
Luck had it that a friend of the family owns a large brace company near my home town. He created a pair of braces for me that wouldn't let my ankle turn and held if firm but still flexible enough for jumping and running.
The braces had metal rods that were sewn into the material in the front and sides kinda like an old fashion girdle. It laced in front so you could pull it tight but not so much as to cut off circulation. The only draw back was that the brace came up above the ankle meaning lots of laces to keep tight and definetly taking a little time. I always had to start dressing before the other players.
After I started wearing these, my problems with twisted ankles were no more. Of course I looked a little different from the other players with my knee socks then my braces then my shoes. But for me it was worth it.
One thing I want to interject is to make sure before you have braces fitted that you have seen a specialist to ensure you have no problems that need correcting surgically. I made several trips to my doctor before I had these braces made but have never regretted spending the money. My mother paid around $200 for them and that was quite a while ago.
I would most definetly recommend having braces made especially for you and not using the store bought, ready made braces if you have a really difficult problem as I had. The store bought braces are great for a sprained ankle but not a serious problem that could cause lasting damage. Also if you are big into sports as I was you want something that will last and provide the necessary support.
