The Bottom Line There are a couple of guidelines for using a trimmer safely, but almost anyone is able to competently trim or edge a lawn.
There are really not a great number of safety tips to remember when using a trimmer or edger. However, it serves you well to be careful, else you may regret it. In case you have never used a trimmer or edger before, I'll tell you how they work. The basic premise is this: at the end of the trimmer, there is a spinning spool with two plastic strings (about .1 inch thick) sticking out from it. This spool spins so quickly that the strings lop off grass, weeds, and even seedling trees. The one safety device that is imperative for trimming or edging is safety goggles. I am not merely referring to plastic glasses that cover the front of your eye; I mean the goggles that protect all the way around your eyes and fit snugly against your face. I don't know how many times a stone has flown up against my goggles while I am trimming grass along the edges of buildings and sidewalks. I would guess that about 50 percent of the stones that hit the goggles have enough force to permanently damage an eye if it is hit. There have been several occasions where a stone hit my skin and has drawn blood. Don't be foolish while trimming or edging; protect the fragile parts of your body. You are aware now that the plastic strings can kick up stones and other debris toward the operator. The only other caution you should take is to steer clear of the strings themselves and to be sure that no one else will get hit by the strings or debris. If you accidentally got your fingers in the strings while the trimmer was running full speed, I don't think your fingers would get cut off, but the strings would definitely cut down to the bone. So please be careful. That said, I have been using a weed trimmer for eight years, since I was twelve years old. I have never really hurt myself. All it takes to use a trimmer well is a little practice and a fair amount of caution. And you know what? It really makes your lawn look nice! |
