Pros: Sleek, very small, light but stable. Easy CD access. Good sound.
Cons: USB cable 1 foot too short. Price a bit high.
The Bottom Line: If you want a small, stable and good quality external CD-ROM, this is a good buy that I highly recommend.

I purchased this TEAC external CD-ROM for a user who needed it to build some portable prototype system. I have purchased many CD-ROM drives and computer equipment; however, this one caught my attention.
Here are the points I liked about this unit, and which were a hit when the user got it in his hand:
- Very sleek look, light but stable, with a metal paint that makes it very elegant.
- It is very quiet, which is not the case with a few other external CD-ROM drives I have used. So it is perfect as a desktop unit.
- The CD access is very handy. There is a top lid that flips up, which is not the case with any other external CD-ROM drives. Usually, one presses a button to pull the tray out, and then clip the CD on it. This is very awkward to me because I would need to put my hand under the tray while snapping the CD onto it, thus not comfortable. With this model, one only has flip up the lid and drop the CD in the drive.
- The other thing I noticed is the quality of the laser.
I tested it with a music CD though this unit is mainly going to be used to access data. However, in playing a music CD, I noticed a definite difference between the other two CD and DVD drives I have in my PCs. The music was clearer and offered a wider range of sounds not noticed with my other CD drives. It surprised me a bit.
- It is so small that you can fit it anywhere, and doesn't need an external power supply to run.
In summary, this is a product that my users and I appreciated. Though a bit expensive for a 10X CD-ROM, I don't regret its purchase.
