The Bottom Line If your from the North and want to try something a little different, head out to one of those Southern restaurants (Sylvia's in downtown Atlanta is a great one)
About two years ago I moved from New York City to Atlanta Georgia. One of the biggest differences I found was that in the South the cooking is surely different than from the North. In the morning I can't find a bagel anywhere in Atlanta but I sure can find all the grits I want on every corner. There are grits with cheese, grits with maple syrup, grits with fruit even grits with chocolate but a bagel is a rare commodity in the South. For the lunch menu, there is an array of fried food. Fried chicken, fried ribs, fried veggies like fried squash and fried okara (what is okara anyways?!) even fried ice cream for dessert. Everything is pretty much deep fried in lard. I have yet to find a good vegetarian restaurant in Atlanta. To the credit of many restaurants in Atlanta, the good old Southern Hospitality is a big plus. Every need is addressed from a coat check when you step into the restaurant (coat check is usually only found in big clubs in NYC, not restaurants!) to friendly polite service (yes ma'am, thank ya ma'am, yall come back soon ya hear). It's definatly an experience that's positive and it will have you talking to all of your Northern friends about it. |
