I won't disagree that the interior is very nice.

The biggest surprise so far with my reliability research is that the new Jetta and Passat aren't in the shop much more than the typical Asian car. The 2006 Civic actually looks worse. Down the road could be a very different story, though. And I've certainly read plenty of Touareg horror stories.

styling? (Reply to this comment)

Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone I've heard comment on it loves the styling, as do I, especially if it's a model with properly sized wheels on it. Women especially seem to love it, inside and out.

In fact, I would venture that with VW's quality reputation (or lack thereof) and the V6 model's mediocre performance, plus the high price relative to other brands, you wouldn't see any on the road if it weren't for its looks.

If another brand made this vehicle, I'd buy one. But I've spent enough time researching opinions of VW owners and in VW dealerships to know I don't want to mess with them at this point in time.

VW SUV (Reply to this comment)

I was also interested in the VW's SUV entry... especially since there are now many vehicle makers who used to NOT have one, do now. I'm talking about the Porche, of course. :) And also now the VW.

BTW... ever going to drive/review the Porche Cayane (sp?) ? :)

RE: "Then again the model I drove was the fairly upscale V10 Diesel" - Very interesting. Did you purchase it in the US, or in Germany? Also, what are HP, torque curve, towing capacity [huge I would imagine...]?

Anyone else with info on the V10 Diesel please share.

Why the Touareg? - towing (Reply to this comment)
by jns10
The Touareg is the only unibody luxury SUV with which I would tow anything important, and has a 7,700lb limit. The XC90, MDX and RX are not really designed to tow anything. Maybe a small trailer or boat, but I wouldn't risk it. The transmission coolers are add ons and the Touareg's is designed in. Only the V8 4Runner has similar capacity in this segment, and it's performance (in part because of it's ladder frame) in my experience is nowhere near that of the Touareg's.

interviews, the Touareg nameplate was a direct command from the folks in Deutschland. Seems that most Europeans actually know what - or more accurately, "who" - the Touareg are. They're a nomadic tribe of the Sahara who are renowned for their ability to go just about anywhere across just about any terrain. Given that association, the name is pretty descriptive - except, of course, for the fact that many Americans don't know where the Sahara is, much less what hardy nomads live there.

Superb, per usual.

VWs sales have been going a bit soft lately. Their prices might have gotten a bit high.

The MDX is awfully proportioned, with an overly short wheelbase and excessive front overhang. I find the X5 and XC90 well-proportioned and attractive in the SUV idiom. The FX I cannot quite make up my mind on, sometimes really liking it, and the Cadillac SRX is too bland. So there are not many great designs in this segment. The problem with the VW is the vague rear end and numerous car-like details that just don't work with a vehicle of this shape and type.

Upgraded leather is part of a $7,300 "Premium Plus" package available only on the V8. This could be the leather you experienced.

I have updated my review to make it clearer that this is the best handling SUV with a low range I've driven. (Though the Porsche is supposed to handle better still.) The problem is, the recent wave of less tall crossover vehicles handles better still, most notably the Infiniti FX and Cadillac SRX. Buyers of the Toareg are making numerous sacrifices in cost, weight, height, passenger capacity, handling, and performance to get the Touareg's off-road capability, so if they're not going to use the last it becomes a questionable purchase in my mind.
