Re: comfort seats (Reply to this comment)

Unfortunately, this is the first time I've seen the post from last September that also asks about the seats.

Many people do not like the Active Steering. With the new 3-Series it is a separate item rather than part of the Sport Package. I've driven the car both ways, but frankly it's been too long since driving the regular car to remember how it compared. I'd have to rely on my review to remember what I thought of it. For 2006 Active Steering is only included with the 545's Sport Package. The 525 and 530 Sport Packages do not include it.

As for the seats, the comfort seats provide adjustments for both the side bolsters, such that they can match the support of the sport seats, and upper recline, where the upper part of the seatback can be adjusted separately. The second feature can be especially nice for the passenger on long trips. I strongly suggest trying a car with them before buying one without them.

You mention in your review that comfort seats are worth the money. How do they compare to the regular seats and the sports seats? I wouldn't get the sports package because I do not want the active steering.
Thank you.

My wife and I are going to buy the new 5-series, but have yet to decide whether we should spend the extra $3300 for the Sports package or opt for some of the other safety and comfort features (i.e., comfort seats, adaptive lights, etc.). Is the handling, steering, and cornering sufficient on the non-sport package, or is there no comparison and one would be a fool to spend $50 k and not spend the extra 3 grand for the active steering and ARS...? Thx.

I too am more partial to the previous 5 series model, at least from a aesthetic view---the look is just a bit too busy, though it is not as egregious as the 7-series. However, I'm sure it drives well in any case.

I think Chris Bangle's controversial designs are such that there have been petitions circling around calling for his dismissal...

I'm confused. What are you trying to say?

except the cold weather package & comfort seats, your review, while well written, doesn't even begin to convey what a pleasure this car is to own and drive.

I think you just about nailed this review right on- Honestly, from the sounds of it, I think I was more partial to the older 5's than you, but nevertheless, I drove a 530 last week and was overwhelmed, it's like they did everything right this time, from interior to drivetrain right and everything in between. LIke everything else desireable though, of course the price tag is pretty bold- I wouldn't take one without the 3 liter, but at long island prices, they can keep it for now.... A true shame indeed

500 horsepower sounds good on paper, but there are limitations with other components, such as with the gearbox, steering systems, etc., that may negate or mitigate against using all of that product.

For example, you're probably not going to get anywhere near that level of horsepower with front wheel drive equipped cars due to torque steer.

I think it's far more power than can be used in the sort of driving I do.

I wonder what mkaresh thinks of the next BMW M5? If the scallywags at Motor Trend are to be believed, 500 naturally aspirated horsepower may be on the horizon.
