thanks for the great review! if youre interested, there is a website up for NHL 94, the address is:
nhl94.com
go to the links section for some real goodies!! in the mahavishnu site, these guys have completely hacked out the game, turining the ice white, and updating team logos, crease, and rosters...including player ratings!!
me? Im working on a site of my own for NHLPA 93. Ive hacked out the ice to white, and updated rosters. Im also working on a "legends" game with teams like the 94 rangers, 67 leafs, etc. you said in your review that its a toss up between nhl 94 and nhlpa 93. I agree, but to, 93 edges out 94, and heres why:
better graphics-if you look very closely, youll notice the graphics in 93 are sharper and larger than in 94
fighting-huge in the game of hockey, EA really pandered at that time by taking it out. it hurt nhl 94. in 93 you had awesome fights
blood-93 had it, 94 did not. again, EA pandered
ron barrs pregame comments-93 had ron barr with a great little summary of each team before the drop of the puck. it really added a personal touch and feel to each team. 94 still had ron barr, but he just made the same comments about each team, which made them feel more generic. this feature is especially fun now that people like myself are hacking the game. you can constantly change ron barrs comments!
gameplay-the gameplay in 93 was better than in 94. in 93 the computer could actually score against you, but in 94 they had a lot of trouble doing this. also there were lots more rebound chances, crazy puck bounces, and just more general fun in the gameplay of nhlpa 93 than in nhl 94. some would call these "quirks", but thats what made the game so addictive
music-the music in nhlpa 93 is leaps and bounds better than nhl 94. the opening theme in 93 will be stuck in your head for weeks, just listen to it! also, 93 had just the right amount of organ music. 94 "overkilled" this, and it seemed at times that the freagin organ would never shut up
to be fair, Ive listed the advantages of 93. proponents of 94 however will say that 94 was better, due to these reasons:
harder cpu-94 fans say the cpu is better. really? couldve fooled me! yes the goalies have "slightly" improved. too bad the cpu's offense though has gone WAY down, so you end up with 6-0 games all the time
team logos-Ill admit I wish 93 had team logos, but I understand why it didnt due to it losing its NHL license for one year(anyonw know why??). 93 though does have all the real players and team colors
onetimers-94 introduced onetimers. its a great feature at first, but it gets real old especially when the computer stinks as badly as they do in 94. blasting the puck into an open net by an inept goaltender isnt exactly my idea of a "challenge". to me, 93 without onetimers was more fun, because it made the game more challenging. if you release the pass with a pass shot towards the net in 93, you somewhat simulate a onetimer anyway, just not as accurate. perfect, thats the way I like it
goalie control-to me this is a useless feature, especially on the genesis. again, the game is more fun without it. the genesis control pad has 3 buttons, so you have to hold down the b button for like 3 seconds before you gain control. bleh, not fun. give me auto goalie anyday
so there you have it. 94 in my opinion lost more than it gained. its still a great game, dont get me wrong. but in the end, nhlpa 93 has to be crowned king of all hockey games
look for my nhlpa 93 website coming soon! take care!

...I still play this game quite regularly. I completely love it and do my friends.
Thanks for a great review of a truly classic game.
