I work as a network administrator and an required to carry a cell phone and a pager. If any of my servers go down, I get a page. My team and I all carry PageWriter 2000Xs and PageWriter 2000s. They are both very similar, the only real difference is the X has some games on it you can play (an actually play with other people that have the same type of pager, like battleship). It has all the bells and whistles that you would expect (different ringers, alarm, time/date, etc.) This pager has a nice little qwerty key pad, is backlit, and has an address book. The battery lasts for almost 2 weeks and it comes with a charger that the whole thing slides into. There is also a adapter that allow you to hook it up to a com port on your computer, but I have yet to try this, I don't have a reason too.
I like the pager as I can store many email addresses and do mailings to my whole group "server's going down at 10:00", it's pretty nice. I guess you could do the same with the new cell phones, but I like having a keypad, and the redundancy of a cell phone and a pager, which is very important in my line of work.
Something I really like about this pager is when you have it on your belt, you can flip it open and read it very easily. It also props up nicely on your desk for easy reading/typing.
There are only a few things I don’t like about it. When you get a page, it rings or buzzes for about 5 seconds and then stops. Then every few minutes, you only get a single beep to remind you that you got paged. Even at it’s loudest, the single beep may not be enough. I am a light sleeper so it wakes me up but some of my other team members have sleep through a page. The other thing is the belt clip it comes with may not hold the pager in tight enough. When I have stepped out of my car, I have occasionally had my pager fall out onto my car seat. It is a little bulky, a little bigger then a deck of card, but I don’t really want it smaller, the keyboard would be too hard to use.
