I'll keep this short and to the point:
My wife and I got a suncom plan 18 months ago after careful consideration, and we felt that it was the best plan for the money. After all, the salesman knocked off 10 dollars per month when we showed him a better deal from another company. In his words "10 dollars off, for the duration of the contract". He then stated that we could have him contacted at any time if there were problems.
Things went great for a while, and our bill was what we had bargained for. 6 months into the contract, we were charged exactly $50 more than what we had been paying. After calling to complain, the rep stated that there was no way to verify that we hadn't made those calls, and there would be a one time, $50 credit. Wasn't it convenient how it worked out exactly, now that we paid $2.50 per month to get a call log statement!
As time went on, we found ourselves charged twice on two occasions. More importantly, our bill crept up from the $35 we originally signed for, to $47 for the plan itself. After complaining to everyone corporately and locally, they referred us to the manager of the local branch in the Bristol, VA mall we got the plan, and the manager there told us that basically it was our words against his, and that he meant that the $35 was for one year only. We found ourselves trapped with this.
This month, our statement was $61, with NO EXTRA CALLS! Taxes, plan hikes, connection fees, 911, all of those charges just keeps creeping up. My wife became fed up, called and griped for the 10th time, and after the lady stated there was nothing she could do about it, then ended the conversation stating that she would waive the 200 buck fee to change plans if we wanted to.
We are also aware of the rollover renewal that everyone else here has griped about. In addition, you can't give them advanced notice when you are upset with the service that you want to end it 5 months in advance. That's too easy. We are under the impression that you have to give them exactly 30 days notice to end it. Not 33 days, as a friend of ours tried to do. (End of the facts... The rest is my opinion)
I'm not sure if the scam is coordinated corporately and locally, but they sure do have their customers under their thumbs. I would suggest that if anyone has read this and thinks it won't happen to them, and decides to go with suncom/att, then put EVERYTHING in writing, including your intentions to end the contract, WAY IN ADVANCE, so that you have some ground to stand on if worse comes to worse. My opinion is that the reason why this happens is that they don't care about your satisfaction as a customer, and probably by some scientific logic on a corporate level, someone has determined that the general public can be baited into signing a contract for a seemingly good deal, and then those who want out of the contract will have a difficult time doing so. Those who figure out the magic formula for getting out of the contract must be far fewer than those who sign up.
If I can say anything to the general public: please, PLEASE heed my warnings, and don't do business with this shady company, and please tell your friends. Only a class action lawsuit against this giant will restore justice to the multitude of victimized customers who are dealing with or have dealt with Suncom.
