VHS vs. DVD let's get ready to rumble!!

Mar 26 '01

The Bottom Line DVD is obviously moving in as VHS moves out. Who knows what will soon become of DVD with it's interactive menu systems, and digital picture almost anything is possible.

When looking at the difference between DVD and VHS one can easily see pluses and minuses for both. I will try to lay them all and keep score.

DVD has 480+ lines of resolution and is a digital format. S-VHS has 400 lines and is analog, VHS has 240 lines and is also analog. The problem with all analog products is that they wear out. VHS tapes will eventually wear out so much that you won't be able to see the tape. (DVD +1)

When comparing prices VHS wins this one all the way. You can go out and buy a fairly decent VCR somewhere between $80 - $150. DVD players right now are anywhere between $150 - $400 depending on all the bells and whistles you want thrown in. The actual movies is where the money will be saved. A DVD movie will cost you about 25 bucks. A VHS movie can be for found for almost half of that. This means you can get 2 VHS movies for the price of one DVD. (VHS +1)

When actually viewing a movie the format is mearly I choice issue. I myself enjoy watching a DVD for the bonus materials such as bonus material, director commentary, widescreen or standard, games, and so on. Something I miss with the DVD format is the trailers that run before the movie on VHS movies. Maybe these annoyed you, but I thought it was an insight to what is coming out on video next. (DVD +1)

One thing that DVD can't touch is the fact that you can record programs, movies, whatever you want on VHS. maybe in the future this will be possible on DVD, but for now it's the main reason that VHS is still clutching onto it's existance. (VHS +1)

The final thing I would like to add before rapping this up is what you can actually put on a DVD. I have purchased a few concerts on DVD. In the Dave Matthews viewer supported DVD you can change to different camera angles and skip to any song you want to listen to at anytime. No where will VHS ever compare with this. (DVD +1)

Final Score
(drum roll please)
DVD 3, VHS 2
