DVD or VCR?

Mar 26 '01

The Bottom Line I still like my good old fashion VCR.

DVD or VCR? This is a question a lot of homes are considering. I know in our home we have the great old VCR, but sometimes I wonder if a DVD would be better since I heard so many great things about it.

First let me explain why I like the VCR for now in our home. I grew up on the real old version of the record playing VCR; you know the kind of VCR that the tape looked like a record for you record player to listen to music?

Then we advanced to the VCR the one that plays VHS tapes and from that day forward we have stuck with this type of Video program. Of course we kept up with the times and updated when we seen a better quality VCR that had more functions and etc.

The reason I have a problem with buying a DVD is this. We have a video camera and we take tons of home videos and sport advents in our family. When we want to view the movie we just stick in the good old VHS tape and WAM there is the show.

Now if we bought a new DVD player, then what will do when we want to watch our old home videos? I don’t see how we can put a VHS tape into a compact disc player. So then do we have to convert all our home videos into some sort of disc?

If so I don’t feel like doing this, and say we kept them both connected to the TV so when we wanted to watch a VHS tape we could and if we wanted to watch a DVD tape we could? Well to me that doesn’t make to much sense and sure would take up a lot of space on top of my cancel TV.

So that is why I’m not to interested in a DVD player at this moment, but I would someday want to invest in a DVD reason being?

I feel that the DVD player gives better quality to your movie viewing. You get better sound and the movie show’s better picture. You also get more functions with a DVD player. You can preview the director’s cut, and watch the DVD movie in your own language.

The DVD player is easy to hook up to your TV, my cousin has one and I seen how his was hooked up, it’s just like your VCR. He says he doesn’t know what he ever done before the DVD player was available and he would never go back to the VCR version again.

With the DVD player you are still able to pause and rewind and fast-forward your movie just like the VCR. Right now NOT all your favorite movies are on DVD I’m talking about the good old classic movies. The “new release” movies all come out on DVD and VHS for both viewing pleasures.

So in conclusion I would suggest you take a moment and decide what is most important to you when you watch a movie. What types of functions are you looking for and how much money are you willing to spend on your DVD or VCR? As for the cost of renting a DVD or VHS tape there is NO difference in the price. For buying the DVD on disk at your store there is a little difference in the price from a DVD to a VHS (at least there is at my store I buy from).

The cost of a DVD player has gone down since they first came out. You can get a new DVD player for around $200.00 or even lower in some stores. A VCR you can get a cheap as $ 80.00 when on sale.

So for now I need to keep my VCR so I can enjoy the home video’s we make. If there comes a day that we can convert our movies over to DVD and it’s simple and doesn’t cost much, then I will switch.
