Could it be you mean a Laser Disc player? I've never owned one and know they are still around (I've seen them on eBay)... and the discs do look like large cds.

I remember VCRs being introduced, and I remember Beta (still have on in fact :), but I don't remember anything like: "I grew up on the real old version of the record playing VCR; you know the kind of VCR that the tape looked like a record for you record player to listen to music?"
Unless this is a strained reference to film, I'm lost. Please enlighten me :)
