And the award for least-dressed female in a supporting role goes to…

The Bottom Line Some things are getting better and some things are getting worse.

I've come to watch awards shows basically for two reasons: I want to see if any movies I like actually win and I want to see how poorly people dress. "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" did pretty well, but they weren't even nominated for special effects. I'm still trying to figure that one out. I want to see "Traffic" now, but only because my parents panned it. Also, I don't know if it's just me, but it always seems like a few of the nominees in each category are from a few years ago. Maybe I have so sense of time or something.

Bob Dylan took best song, but I have to admit that there wasn't much competition. Björk was the only other nominee that I liked at all. As usual, Dylan seemed spaced out during the performance, almost like he wasn't really aware of what was going on. To boot, no one I know can figure out what was going on with all those close-ups.

Anyway, betting back to Björk, what was the deal with that swan? I thought it was just another bad dress until I noticed the head. It was then that I realized that it was a bizarre dress. Most of the men were smart enough to wear a tuxedo or something. Looking at the way the women dressed, I wish they had a similar option. Jennifer Lopez had an interesting dress. Unfortunately, good taste prohibited me from getting a chance to see it.

Another major complaint I always have is the lack of good categories. Sure, there's best actor in a dramatic, feature-length, freckling film that was subtitled. That's fine, but want to see stuff like "Best movie reviewer" or something. (For the Emmy's, we can have something like "least-dressed female at an awards show.")

Steve Martin did a good job for the most part. There were a few jokes I didn't get and a few that I would have avoided had I been in his place. Still there were a few lines that were right on target.
