Because it's cheaper than the moviesMar 26 '01 Write an essay on this topic.
Popular Products in DVD Players
The Bottom Line Save your money and your ears and buy a DVD player. You will find it much more convenient and fulfilling than the theatre.
I have had a DVD player since June 2000 and found it worth every penny. See my review go to http://www.epinions.com/elec-review-6AEA-813D2AB-393F923C-prod4 . Being a gadget junkie and all around tech geek I had wanted one since they first came out but I wanted to wait for the DIVX thing to be sorted out. On the soapbox. For those of you not familiar with DIVX it was an evil, misguided attempt to extort excessive quantities of money out of consumers to watch movies at home. What it amounted to was you “Rented” a specially encoded DIVX DVD for about $5 and took it home. You were then allowed to view it a couple of times within 48 or 72 hours (I don’t remember exactly). The supposed benefit was that you did not need to return it. Then if you wanted to view it again later you entered your credit card number and were charged to “Rent” it again. You could pay differing amounts depending on how much you wanted to watch it. Luckily it did not work out and Circuit City dropped it. Off the soapbox. So, half the reason I bought a DVD player was that I thought NETFLIX.com was a great idea. I could rent four movies at a time by mail and have them replaced as many as four times a month depending on how fast the mail was and how fast I watched them. They also have the best selection and I don’t have to go to Blockbuster. The other reason I bought a DVD player was that I have a difficult time getting to the movies but there were many movies I wanted to see. Now I can add another reason to be glad I have a DVD player and NETFLIX. I went to see a movie yesterday and went into sticker shock. I went to a 12:30 show and the “Matinee” price was $6. I know I haven’t been to a movie in a while (about a year) but this is highway robbery. I will NEVER go to a full price movie for $8. I know you people back east are paying $10 dollars so don’t think I am just a whiner. I would be picketing the theatre if they wanted to charge me that much. With the quantity of low quality movies that have come out in the last few years I think it is obnoxious to expect me to pay that much for a movie. Then as if that is not enough the movie is too loud. I wanted to turn down the volume repeatedly. After all, this was a romantic comedy, not an action thriller. I don’t think that “The Wedding Planner” needs to be as loud as “Armageddon.” I have decided to save up for a new receiver and extra speakers for the full “Home Theatre” set-up. Then I will have a movie theatre like experience with a few differences. First, the screen is smaller but I am closer so that is not as big a deal as it sounds. Second, I will be able to turn down the volume when it is too loud. Third, I can eat anything I want to without worrying about getting kicked out. Fourth, the show starts whenever I want it to. And, finally after a few dozen movies I will have paid for the system with the money I didn’t spend at the theatre. Buy a DVD player, it is superior to VHS and cheaper than the theatre. |
