Julia's nightMar 26 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line A great show with a lot of class. These awards gave me a headache!!!! Don’t get me wrong. I loved them…I ALWAYS love them. This year just really made me antsy though. I was pretty right-on the money with my predictions, but there were a few surprises. Read on to see! STEVE MARTIN He was funny, but he wasn’t Billy Crystal. He hit hard on a bunch of stars, but most of them played along and had fun with it. Russell Crowe didn’t seem to have any personality though! Martin would crack a joke and he just sat there like he couldn’t handle the humor. Personally I thought he did a fine job, but I really missed seeing Crystal’s video clips that he starred in…that and the songs he would create. Overall-- better than Whoopi, but no Billy Crystal. AWARDS Wow! Who would have thought Marcia Gay Harden would win for best supporting actress? I haven’t seen the movie, but she seemed like a long shot. I was hoping the best picture winner would have been a long shot, but unfortunately the Academy fell for the epic. It was a really good movie (Gladiator), but it wasn’t a GREAT movie. I think that definitely Traffic, Erin Brockovich, and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon deserved the award more. Russell Crowe was another surprise to me. Personally I didn’t think his performance was anything extraordinary. I had inclinations that he would win, but I really enjoyed Hanks one-man performance in Cast Away, and I was hoping it would be awarded to him. Everyone reading this probably thinks I hate Gladiator. I DON’T!!! I just think it was overrated. Julia was spectacular! She was probably the most thankful winner of the evening—she always is. I love watching people LOVE something like that. You just realize how special it is to them. I loved the part when she laughed too—you just can’t find anything to dislike about her! MUSIC Poor Randy Newman--so many nominations, and not a single win. I agree that Bob Dylan had the best song though, so what can I say? Better luck next time? I thought all of the performances were a bit peculiar. Randy was great, but that girl totally ruined the song. Crouching Tiger was cool, but would someone mind telling me where that song plays in the movie! Bjork is a strange girl, but her song was all right—not winning material, but just all right. The cameraman for Bob Dylan really liked those close up shots. Personally they freaked me out. The song didn’t sound right though. It’s a great song, but it was a poor performance. Sting was great…nothing bad to report. Oh yeah, and the music done by Yo-yo ma was dazzling. It went straight into my veins. FASHION It was Julia Robert’s night definitely. She looked exquisite in a vintage Armani piece. It was the classiest thing I saw all night—that and Catherine Zeta-Jones’ gown. She also was a masterpiece! I noticed that the men’s hair was worn a little funky this year. They all kind of had that bed-head look. I really wanted to cut that little curl patch off Russell Crowe! Women really were returning to traditional Hollywood glamour, and I thought that was very cool. Overall, a great show with a lot of class. |
