My Throat Hurts!!!

The Bottom Line If you have a red, sore throat with fever, white pustules or drooling, (especially in babies), see a doctor as soon as possible.

Sore throats come in all kinds from mild throat irritation from perhaps screaming to much at a ball game, urging on a favorite race car driver, irritation from smoking (if one didn't smoke this type wouldn't be a problem), a sore throat caused from a cold/influenza to a sore throat caused by the strep germ.

Most sore throats respond to throat remedies such as Chloraseptic spray or throat lozenges. A tried and true remedy is gargling warm salt water for a few minutes a couple of times a day. I remember doing this many times as a child.

A more serious sore throat is a strep throat. This sore throat is caused by a bacteria, the streptococcal variety. This type of sore throat must be treated with antibiotics. Left untreated, major problems might occur such as Rheumatic fever. I know from experience what improperly treated strep throat can do.

I got Rheumatic fever about 2 years ago from improperly treated strep throat. I have damage to a heart valve and muscular involvement.

If you or your child have a severely red, sore throat and perhaps little white patches or pustules on the back of the throat and tonsils etc. it might be strep throat. This calls for a doctor's visit.

The person with strep throat or the influenza will probably run a temperature also. A sore throat from a cold doesn't usually cause a fever. If a fever is present another likely culprit is an ear infection.

If a small child has a sore throat, it is always better to err on the side of caution and take them in to see the doctor. It is always better to be safe rather than sorry.
