| edwardjfry's Full Review: Motorola StarTAC ST7760 CDMA / AMPS Cellular Phone |
I got this phone when it first came out and was the coolest phone on the block at the time. I paid several hundred dollars new.
OK the good first,
First off is the size, a very small and flat phone that can fit just about anywhere, It would fit comfortable in your pants pocket but the antenna sticks out about an inch even when stowed and would be damaged in a tight spot like you pants pocket, but does well in your shirt pocket and is very light as well. I have seen even smaller cell phones today but they are actually much heavier in comparison, you could put the star tack (with standard battery) in your breast pocket and forget it is there, where the smaller phones with more hardware stuffed inside would be heavier and noticeable in your pocket pulling your shirt down and bouncing around. If you take off the battery the phone is so light it feels like a hollow piece of plastic.
Now being so light and small you would think it would be delicate. I am surprised it has last me this long, It has been dropped several times on pavement, stepped on once, banged around in my back pack full of hard cover books with the phone down on the bottom somewhere, its been exposed to all weather, summers sitting in the car in California, trips to the mountains and snow, and I also spend a lot of time on the dive boats exposing it to damp salty sea air, and its got the scratches, scars and bent antenna to prove it and it works as well today as the day I got it.
OK now the cons. ... it only came in 2 or maybe 3 colors, black, maroon and maybe another color, I got the maroon which is now very rare. when the battery went bad i looked every where for another maroon battery but couldn't find them any where so now i have a maroon phone with a black battery on the front. and speaking of the battery, I don't know if there is a problem with the phone sucking too much power or poor batteries but even with a new battery I have to charge everyday if i keep it on even if i don't talk on it or it will go dead, the new phones can go for close to a week now.
also when talking on the phone for about 5 min or more at once the phone actually becomes HOT, and unless you are in a cold climate, is uncomfortable.
The phone has a few ring tones but no vibrate so it has to be turned off in theaters or class.
the phone doesn't have all the cool features but I don't need them, if i buy a phone I want to use it as a phone first and foremost
as for the phone quality, it works but is not the best and often will drop my calls if signal is not strong.
I cant list all the extra features the phone has like security, phone book and others honestly because I don't use them and are hard to figure out without the manual which I have long since lost, but it does have several of these features.
