XFX? Avoid the aggravation, shop elsewhere.
Written: Oct 27 '03 (Updated Nov 26 '03)
Pros: Low price, accepts cheap SDRAM.
Cons: Zero reliability, worthless tech support. Use someone else - use ANYONE else.
The Bottom Line: Flawed design sold with flawed data. Website useless, tech support exists only to provide return numbers. Avoid these clowns at all costs. The product is garbage.
I had to build a couple systems for people who were light-duty users: web surfing and a little e-mail. People for whom a real powerhouse would be a total waste. This board was just what I needed, with onboard sound & video that were adequate & XP-supported. Plus, it still used inexpensive SDRAM.
I built up a system using a 1.3 gig Duron and it ran like a champ. For the second system I got a good deal on a 2.0 gig Athlon. The XFX site doesn't say much of anything but they do have a chart that states the board will take Athlon XPs from 1.5 to 2.6 so I expected no problems. Unfortunately, the system would not boot with the Athlon. It would not even stay running for more than 5 seconds - and I tried both boards with the Athlon. (Both would run the Duron.) After trying the Athlon again, I now got messages that the hard drive was bad (not true) and other odd POST noises.
When I finally got through to a live tech, all he kept saying was I had the 'wrong series' CPU. He could not provide an answer when I asked him, based on the data XFX provides, how I, the buyer, was supposed to determine this. His excuse was "It's an older board" - not so old that they didn't rate it up to 2600 , however.
I advise all to avoid this board for any application other than Duron CPUs. Better yet, avoid this company altogether and go with someone who provides real tech support.
P.S.: It's been a month since I wrote the above and now the first board is also dead. So it can't survive with a Duron either.
