| ceciltheme's Full Review: Aye, and Gomorrah |
This book contains the best of Delany's short stories that have been published during his days of active science fiction and fantasy writing. While I am tempted to call it hit or miss, there are some stories in there that I really loved and others that I found were just ok. Ironically, when comparing notes with other Delany fans, they tend to love the stories that I was luke warm about. Just to let you know my demented tastes: the best story for me was the one where the unicorn tries to "assault" a virgin.
Fans of Delany will love this book: it's all the Chip you could ever ask for. While there are not any stories in there that have the dense prose of Dhalgren, many of them do have the charm of the Einstein Intersection. You will also get to see the many twists and turns he has taken in his writing. Surprisingly enough, not all of his short stories deal with gender (he's gay/bi) or race (he's black). Sure, some do, but mostly, they use fantasy and sci-fi worlds to address the passions and wonts of the human condition.
This is one of his best crafted works. He manages to keep your eyes gliding through the text without dumbing anything down. And for those of us who love Delany but were not born during the 1960's, we get to see first hand some of the stories that older fans have been talking about.
In case you're wondering, the story that this anthology is named after "Aye, and Gomorrah" is not the best work in the book. There are others in there that are even better.
Five stars for Delany.
