This is why I end up sitting with my daughter watching TV. Even when I'm not in the room with her, I'm watching and listening from the next room. The only adult shows we watch together are on the Food Network. :)

I really hate Jerry Springer and all the others how many kids are they going to send to boot camp and do fertility tests for? My husband watches Jerry Springer and he says the people are idiots but he likes to watch the fights. I told him idiots are the ones that watch the show and keep it on air. He thinks of it like his wrestling shows. He says they are male soap operas all the plots interrupted by the occasional fight. I do have say that he does not watch them with our 21 month old twins, for that I'm grateful. He also says he will make sure, if they ever watch wrestling that they know it is fake and people are pretending to be bad but that is years away.

about your husband (Donna told me) and do hope he is feeling better. My friend's 25-year-old son has a pacemaker and he is doing well. Prayers are with you all.

Parents really should know what their children watch (Reply to this comment)
by momofchris
My Mom always did. Although I do remember being really upset with her because I couldn't go see Star Wars with my other friends. At the time (11 years old), I was not allowed to see any PG rated movies. I always plan on supervising whatever my son watches. Thankfully at 2, his favorite show is the Sesame Street segment Elmo's world. I can certainly live with that.

I'm not sure I'd go so far as to blame the media for school violence, but it sure doesn't help. Unfortunately kids watch TV out of boredom and not being stimulated otherwise.

I agree, but... (Reply to this comment)

there are some 'R'-rated and unrated films that are not blockbusters that deserve to be shared with one's family, in my opinion. Most of my favorites films are foreign (the Seventh Seal, Tampopo Soup, Wings Of Desire) and while they have adult themes, they DO have a plot and promote thought and discussion.
While I do agree that most fluff from Hollywood is made to make money from the masses and does not deserve to be watched by people of any age, there are some rather good pieces of art that are repressed because of not being rated 'PG', and because many families do not share their entertainment.
I feel sorry for people that assume that because something has adult themes it is unsuitable for sharing with their (older)children, or do not watch and discuss films with them. My family shares films pretty often, and discuss them while they are playing and also once they are over.

I am a bad example I let my grandson watch Lake Placid and he liked it. At first when we picked it out it said it was a comedy. I thought adventure comedy with a croc. The crocodile ate a cow. Well it is not something a three year old should watch. He talked about it for weeks and I have never heard the end of it. I always watch an adult movie first now. thanks for sharing. BJ

Not only are these shows bad..ever watch the news? I believe they give us more than we want to know. The media is the cause of copy cat crime! Why do you think there is so much school violence lately? They should ban all tv coverage of those type crimes! People not only get the idea of committing these crimes, TV is showing them how!!

I sincerely believe the invention of TV did more bad than good!

An European view (Reply to this comment)
by NetDanzr
Coming to the US, I was appalled to find out there was absolutely no sex on TV. I mean the kind of sex you see on TV in Europe. Because of this, I cannot see the points you make with teen shows and commercials, which I view as absolutely harmless.

As for the Jerry Springer issue, I was under the impression that it is broadcasted in late morning when all children are supposed to be at school. If a child watches it, the parent should be the first to blame, and not the TV show.

Anyway, this was a well-crafted article and a great opportunity for me to see the other side of the issue; thanks :)

I even wrote something similar last year in my Epinion about PG-13s and young teens.

Unfortunately those who should be listening to us probably aren't (they're too busy watching Jerry Springer with their kids).

Thanks for writing this nonetheless.

...Ads can be bad too. A perfectly good show can have really bad ads with it. About the only ways to handle this are to either have your kids watch mostly tapes, or to sit with them so you can explain things to them when necessary.

Great essay.

I just read an article (Reply to this comment)

about the new "tween" audience (between child and teen) that said that this age group is very influenced by t.v./advertising..etc.. The only shows I've seen properly geared to this set, are on cable, like the Dear America series. I'm with you on this one-I don't want my kids watching mature shows (or immature more likely)until they're old enough to hold a job. Robin

a few weeks ago about which talk shows I HATE - 'Jerry Springer', 'Jenny Jones' and 'Sally Jesse Raphael', - These were my picks! I do like too, but don't make a habit of watching either of these, either - Oprah and Montel - These two seem REAL, at least... the three you mention (since they stay on the air) make me wonder about America's intelligence level. It doesn't take a genius to be disgusted by "JERRY, JERRY, JERRY..." ... With all my best - Loved your review. You write wonderful essays, Gina

Re: It's+really+sad (Reply to this comment)
by 1truluv
Yes Diane, it is sad...these types of shows should be on late night television, so that young kids cannot watch them. I can't believe that they put them on in the afternoon, when children are out of school. Thanks for reading and commenting.

My teenage nieces watch Springer and the other shows like that all of the time and I just hate it. Those shows send some very bad messages to young girls.

Great editorial!
