The Bottom Line Dont take my word for it. Shop around, a lot, and then keep shopping with some hardcore bargaining= best player at low price.
What do you look for when buying a portable DVD player? The size of course! Its not actually that simple. What you really need to do is write down all the reasons why you need or in mamy cases WANT a portable player. I could write a thouand words on this topic, but i will keep it brief and anyone wanting further info can contact me at dry6tm@leeds.ac.uk. If you make regular long flight trips then you want the smallest, lightest player, with the largest posible screen size. This allows for good viewing quality but at the same time it wont haul you down. Most of the new generation players sport 7" screens, but I think kenwood have one that has an 8" screen. Maybe worth checking this out. Also, ensure the sound through headphones is loud enough, or else it will be droned out by the aeroplanes noise. These newer players are the most expensive, and may cost upto $1000. Models worth checking out are the Panasonic LV-75, AIWA, and Sharp, along with SONY. If u are buying the player for the I-LOVE-GADGETS-EVEN THOUGH I DONT TRAVEL MUCH factor, then check out the Pioneer PDV-LC10, one of the older models on the market which has good screen quality with a 7" screen, good sound and may cost $500-700. The only drawback is the huge battery pack which fits to the underside of the player, which makes it about 3" thick and weigh a ton. Still if your not travelling a lot, this unit should suffice. It has color and brightness controls built into the unit for immediate adjustment, and the battery cradle ensures it stays stable and is higher of the ground for better viewing. This is the player I have. Best advice is not to buy until u have tried and tested all the models several times, even if this means walking into the same shop a hundred times. Spending a 1000 dollars on a portable player is a decision u dont want to do twice. Dont buy the first player u see only to sell it 4 months down the line, for another player. These players are very expensive, dont enjoy a good resale value(less than half price), but provide hours of entertainment. Make the right choice first time. The reason I havent mentioned screen quality is because I find all the screens to be similar. They are all excellent, but do show graininess if observed closer, but perform as well or better than most home dedicated players when hooked up to a regular TV. Dont forget to check out if the player has all the connections of a regular home player. Remember, you are not just paying for the portability factor, but that it is also a home player.
