An Old Timers Take On Building The Web Of Trust
by coldsteel7 | Mar 27 '01
The Web of Trust is a useful tool. Protect it, nurture it, participate and enjoy Epinions. The WOT will grow.

"fomenting friendships..." Did I miss something? I thought I spelled that right.

you fogot to mention... (Reply to this comment)

that Epinions' bugs can cause fluctuations in your WOT, too. That's been my experience at least. Oh, I wrote 'fogot' on purpose cuz you wrote 'fomenting friendships'. :-) So how was the gathering???????

I don't get it (Reply to this comment)

I don't see why you should ever remove someone from your WoT just because they have been inactive, unless there are limits to the number of people that can be on it, although I am not aware of such limitations. And in my experience someone who can be trusted doesn't change his character just like that.

I thought the WoT was meant to give an evaluation of people's reviewing skills. If I add someone it is to express that I think they are honest people writing reviews with the best of intentions, which is of course a pure subjective perception of things. Nothing more nothing less. Cheers, ViK

Another Great Review... (Reply to this comment)

..and I'm glad that you mentioned the backwards movement...all of sudden I've been moving in that direction and was wondering what in the world was going on. I think your explanation is probably it, although I never trust back someone...they gotta earn that on their own merit. :)
Keep up the great writing....kath

No brown nosing here . . . (Reply to this comment)

John, you were one of the handful of veteran Epinionators I looked up to (and still do) when I began my Epinions career.

It helped that you lived in my former back yard too, Kailua, Hawaii. So I tend to keep an eye on your profile. lately, I will admit I haven't stopped by in a while but I am getting around to it!

If you want to know how to write great reviews, read more of John's reviews!

I have quite a few people who have me on their WOT and I have gone back through all of my reviews and can't find where they have ever rated any of my reviews! The WOT can be a great tool, but unfortunately, many abuse it.

Great review!

my WOT (Reply to this comment)
by ifif1938
is like my closet, I must go clean it out.I always keep thinking when I see someone that hasn't written in a while that maybe he/she will be back..especially if it's someone I really enjoyed reading or communicated with....
You are one person I would never clear out.
Since the beginning of my writing here I've always thought of you as one of my most trusted.
Maybe it was the nice e-mail you once sent helping me out about something...or that old picture of you on your profile page. LOL
Great review as usual

Dear John, (Reply to this comment)

No. This is not a Dear John letter........

Just a note to say thanks for a thorough and helpful epinion.

Too often I see users following up their First Five epinions with a "How to write success reviews..." I always appreciate reading "Epinions.com-related" reviews from those who have actually succeeded here.

thanks for working to make this site ever-better.

Re: are+helpful+ratings+bad?! (Reply to this comment)
by coldsteel7
I agree that "Helpful" ratings aren't bad. I guess I should clarify that (generally speaking) I think people add writers to their Web of Trust when they consistently produce the high quality work that normally earns a "Highly Recommended" rating. If a member is getting a majority of "Helpful" ratings, there may be a few tips or pointers that can boost that rating. The boosted rating will probably increase the Trusted List, as well. I hope that explains my point better.

are helpful ratings bad?! (Reply to this comment)
by lunariia

Good advice... but I don't think "helpful" ratings are as bad as you make them out to be. Particularly from harsh reviewers. Also with the system of "advisors" one "helpful" rating can drag the overall rating down.

This information is extremely useful. I have been writing a few months, and work very hard to read and rate my followers. I also spend time every day reading new people. That is certainly how we will grow.

Most enjoyable.

As a matter of fact ~ I'm visiting today because I'm "weeding out" some while I revisit others. You've always been a good friend and cherished member of my WOT. I hope to always find you there when I need you and hope you will let me know whenever you're in a situation you would like to talk to me about. I admire you as a writer and will always respect your point of view.

Re: I+Must+Admit... (Reply to this comment)
by coldsteel7
I guess I owe you a belated apology. I do not spend much time reviewing my older articles, to see who read and rated them. I try to keep up with my recent articles, and go back and rate people who have rated recent articles. It is difficult to stay on top of every aspect at this website. I am going to check out some of your recent articles right now. Thanks for the input. (This emphasizes my point about communicating back and forth).

Good advice (Reply to this comment)
by mike24
for rookies and vets alike.

I personally "trim" my WOT if someone
has not written anything in over
4 months. I figure they've left the
sight and why waste time. If they return
it is simple enough to add them back.

Thanks

Good advice on a confusing topic (Reply to this comment)
by proeditor
Sometimes I take people off my WOT if they no longer write about topics I'm interested in -- I am to busy reading topics that do interest me. I'm still trying to decide whether to delete non-active members.

I Must Admit... (Reply to this comment)
by sherrylee
...that you were one of the first people I trusted (third, I think). I must also admit that after about 6-7 months, I did drop you. If you look back at your earlier reviews, you will see that I read & rated every single one of them (I think we started a few weeks apart), & in that time you only read 2-3 of mine. I was miffed, childish but true. Some great advice here, thanks for posting it.

Vania-

I think we have all "pruned dead branches" from our list. If a member has completely stopped writing, then why keep them on a list, and continually visit an unchanged page. There is a big difference between maintaining your list and culling trust through deceit. Thanks for your candid comments. It brings up a good point...should you prune your list of members who are no longer active? I personally feel it is alright, and maybe even recommended.

Excellent advice!!! (Reply to this comment)
by vania
This was a great article about the WOT. I must admit I'm guilty of "dropping" some people from my list, though. I recently went through and cleaned up my list, which meant dropping some people who left Epinions after the new format. I felt bad for doing it, but I would like my list to stay fresh with people who are currently writing b/c I use my WOT as sort of a reading list!

some wonderful points. The reason I feel my WOT isn't very large is mostly because I don't spend enough time at Epinions. I'm trying to fix that now :) Great essay.
