The cost of a Truck CamperMar 27 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line A new truck-new camper combo: $40K-$70k A new truck-used camper combo: $35K-$60K A used truck-new camper combo: $20K-$55K A used truck-used camper combo: $15K-$45K The cost of a truck camper depends upon how bargain savvy you are vs. how important it is for you to own new equipment. A new truck (at least a 3/4 ton up to a 1 ton dual wheel truck depending on camper weight) will cost you about $30-35K, perhaps 40K. A new fully self-contained slide-in camper can cost anywhere between 10K-30K, depending on size and options. Together that adds up to anywhere between $40K-$70k. Some are leery about buying a used truck camper because rarely will do people readily part with their truck camper (unless they're upgrading) and leaks or other major problems are usually the reason people decide to unload them. So inquire thoroughly about the used campers you contemplate buying. Quality used campers usually sell anywhere from $5K-17K. So my advice, if you're trying to cut costs somewhere, is buy the truck used and the camper new. Look for deals. My husband and I found a used 1995 F250 Heavy-duty truck with just 15,000 miles that we bought for $15,000. We then ordered a new Lance base model camper with all our favorite options for $11k, including tax and installation. So our entire truck / camper package adds up to $26K, which is less than a brand new Toyota Camry. Gas is another story. Expect to get anywhere between 7-12 miles per gallon, depending on engine size and quality. Upkeep can cost you generally between $100-500 a year for batteries, repairs, upgrades, supplies, etc. |
