| gaelkm's Full Review: Mack's Hot Orange Child Size Silicone Ear Plugs |
My life with earplugs is a long and strangely fascinating tale. It all began many years ago, with my husband and his snoring. His snoring is not your everyday average snoring, oh no, his is the "Superbowl of Snoring". If snoring were an Olympic event, my husband would win the Gold Medal! Yes, it is that unbelievable. (Because he didn't believe me, I taped his snoring once, so he could hear the ruckus he makes.) To top it off, as luck would have it, I'm a light sleeper. Things were not going at all well for me with trying to get some shut-eye. Luckily, it didn't take me too long to figure out that I needed earplugs and I needed them pronto. (I first got some of the spongy-foam type, but they didn't work for me at all. They kept falling out of my ears.)
One day, while sleepily browsing around in the swim section at my local sports store, I found some ear plugs for swimmers, called MACK'S SILICONE EARPLUGS that I had never seen before and dreamily wondered if they could be used while sleeping. They certainly looked interesting and claimed to protect against "swimmer's ear". I quickly snapped them up, paid the $2.50 that they cost and took them home.
Once at home, I read the easy instructions. The ear plugs I bought were for children, but there are adult size earplugs available too. My ears/ear canals are fairly small, so the child size plugs work just fine for me.
I cannot say enough good things about these earplugs. MACK'S Earplugs are made of silicone and feel like pliable putty. The packaging suggests shaping them into a ball and pushing them into your ear opening. I did as they suggested and they worked beautifully. They didn't hurt when I placed my ear against the pillow. Nor did they itch. Best of all, they did not fall out and they do a terrific job at blocking out noise!
Since that time, I have purchased many of the MACK'S SILICONE EARPLUGS, both in the child (orange) size and the adult (white) size, which are about 1/3 larger. I have since also found them in the larger value pack at Wal-Mart for about $4.00 for a container of 12 (6 pair). They last me for many months. When they become dirty or dusty and no longer "stick", you merely discard them. I also take them everywhere with me, traveling and even to movies, or sporting events, which can sometimes blare too loudly. They are also great to use if you need a quiet atmosphere to study. MACK'S are also wonderful for flying discomfort during ascent/descent or for even sleeping while you fly.
MACK'S EARPLUGS are incredibly easy to use and work wonders. The directions stress that you should cover your ear opening with the ear plugs, but not to insert them into the ear canal. To do this, you roll the earplug into a ball shape and place the plug over the ear opening. Then you flatten it (I use my thumb or forefinger) which forms an airtight seal. You should first pull your hair back out of the way too, so it doesn't become caught in the silicone.
To loosen the plugs is simple also. You can either push up behind your ear or pull down on your ear lobe to loosen the plug and pop it out.
The warning on the package says that children under the age of 12 should be supervised when using Mack's Earplugs. Obviously, they should be kept away from small children and infants because, although the earplugs are non-toxic, they could cause choking if swallowed. These earplugs are not for use in scuba diving or at depths more than 10 feet under water.
On the back of the box is a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) for this product. The Environmental Protection Agency requires that anti-noise earplugs display a label showing the NRR of that product. MACK'S (Pillow Soft) Silicone Earplugs have an NRR rating of 22 decibels. Packaging states: "The range of noise reduction ratings for existing hearing protectors is approximately 0 to 30." (The greater the number signifies the greater effectiveness of reduction of decibels entering the ear.)
Pillow soft, and effectively pliable, MACK'S SILICONE EARPLUGS have earned the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.
Mack's Silicone Earplugs have been manufactured since 1962 and are considered #1 among earplugs.
Besides Wal-Mart, MACK'S SILICONE EARPLUGS can also be purchased at other stores including: Target, Rite-Aid, Longs, Jewel-Osco and the Ear Plug online superstore at: http://store.yahoo.com/earplugstore/macks.html
