OK, here's my unusual list

The Bottom Line My list isn't chosen necessarily for its entertainment value, but for the story of the movies, or special circumstances in the movies.

I tried to remember all the ones I'd list. My only criterion is that the candidate movie is one that I would never pass up an opportunity to watch, even if it is in my collection and could watch it any time, for any reason. Because of this, many new movies aren't on the list (like X-men), because I haven't had enough time to say that I would never get tired of it. It's the current favorite candidate to be added to the list though.

Another interesting point is that the reason I consider these movies great is probably not a popular reason. You'll see what I mean as you read on (if you do!)

10. Tron
Why: Innovative for its time (see my review on this one). Even though it has a weak plot, I still love to watch it.

9. It's a Wonderful Life/Miracle on 34th Street
Why: Even after burning out on it a few years ago when EVERY TV station played it over and over again, I still want to see it at least once a year, just like Rudolph, the Heat Miser and Frosty.

8. Toy Story/Toy Story II
Why: Computer graphics, 100%. Good story. Believable characters. Funny interaction.

7. Mary Poppins
Why: I feel like a kid again. Great songs (Supercalifragilisticexpealidocious, Step in Time, Let's Go Fly a Kite). Great animation for the time. Touching (Feed the Birds). This just give me all kinds of warm fuzzies.

6. The Quiet Man
Why: Reasonably humorous. Beautiful landscapes. Reference to Pittsburgh, my home town. Good story that says that it's OK to fight at the right time for the right reasons.

5. Return of the Jedi/A New Hope/The Empire Strikes Back (in that order)
Why: All of these are simply classics in anybody's book. Groundbreaking special effects. Fantastic story steeped in classic mythology (can't go wrong there).

4. Star Trek: First Contact / Wrath of Khan
Why: The two best movies of this series, one in Next Generation, one in Original Cast. Good stories. Good action. Good drama. Just enough humor. And it's sci-fi!

3. The Matrix
Why: Everything. Fantastic story, including an interesting doomsday future (like Terminator). Groundbreaking special effects. Good acting (Lawrence Fishburn!!!, and even Keanu was OK).

2. The Princess Bride
Why: Everything. Wonderful adaptation of the book. Good acting. Great humor. Good action. MANY quotable lines. It's the perfect fairy tale movie. Fantastic theme song (Storybook Story), written by Mark Knopfler.

Some quotes (sorry, can't resist): "Hello, my name Inigo Montoya. You kill my father. Prepare to die." "He's been mostly dead all day." "Have fun storming the castle. Do you think they'll make it? It'll take a miracle." "Inconceivable!" "I want my father back, you son of a b*tch."

1. Contact
Why: See my review on this one. This is the most important movie of the 1990s. Carl Sagan's swan song. Faithful, if reduced, adaptation of the book. One rare sci-fi story where my suspension of disbelief did not kick in. Plausible what-if scenario of possibly the most important event in human history.

OK, so there are 15 movies in this list. But the groupings fit. There are others that didn't make the list. They are, in no particular order: The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Andromeda Strain, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Grease, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Practical Magic, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, UHF, The Patriot, Aladdin. I almost never tire of these movies either, but not as much as the ones listed above.

Please comment! I'd like to hear what you think of this list.
