The ride of this bike were really sweet. This is the last year of the carbon main tubes / aluminum rear triangle/only 2.9 lbs. After only about 200 rides, or 2000 miles, including several rides up a very steep hill in san diego, the seat cluster split open, ruining the frameset. I guess it was my size (240 lbs) together with a steep ascent which really torqued out the seat cluster.
Frankly, I am disappointed with the quality of this frameset. I thought that by purchasing a frame design that was 8 years old, they would have all of the bugs out. I was wrong.
I talked to the store where i bought the frame, and TREK will replace it, but this is not an unheard of failure mode for this frameset. Since this is the first frameset I've broken, and I'm a fairly wimpy rider, I am disappointed.
Sweat can cause the carbon to delaminate near the seatpost on these bikes, so make sure to keep it clean and/or waxed. My frame still looks brand new but its ruined.
I feel like someone stole my frame from me. I'm not sure I'd buy another TREK after this experience.
