I've been buying and selling on eBay off and on for about 4 years. I've purchased everything from shipping materials to movies to my bowflex. All in all, my experiences have been good. There was an incident early on where I spent $120 on something and the seller made off with my money (eBay makes you jump throw hoops to get compensated for things like this). Since then, I've learned to only buy from users with good feedback and lots of it. Delivery speed, accuracy, and such all depend on the particular seller with whom you're dealing. The feedback system is very helpful, and it's what makes me choose to look on eBay for online purchases before looking for independent webpages.
Perhaps because of the massive size of eBay, it can be hard to find answers to questions. They do provide (very popular) message boards which can be helpful.
For sellers, eBay + Paypal fees take a chunk out of profits. This sometimes results in higher prices for consumers. The best "deals" on eBay usually come from garage sale kind of items. But I was able to buy a 120 piece box of colored pencils for $50 on eBay as opposed to $120 locally at Micheal's. There are definitely deals out there for those willing to research.
Make sure you know the value of what you want to buy before the auction. Set a limit, and don't get caught up in bidding wars. Read descriptions thoroughly, and ask any questions of buyers before you bid. eBay can be a great experience or a horrible one; a lot of it depends on you. Good luck!
