10 Best Sports Movies Ever

Mar 28 '01

The Bottom Line The following ten movies, mostly from 1985-2000, will keep you laughing, crying, and cheering for hours to come.

Here is the list of my top ten favorite sports movies. Most of these movies come from the late 80's to 90's and maybe one or two in 2000's. Also, chances are I have not seen every sports movie ever. I have many favorites, but only ten great ones will make the list.

With out further delay.......

10. Hoop Dreams- Real life documentary on two high school stars. This movie brilliantly portrays the hardships off and on the court of star athletes.

9. Prefontaine- Inspiring story of Steve Prefontaine, one of the greatest runners ever, so this deserves to be one of the best sports movies ever.

8. Happy Gilmore- Clearly the comical movie of the ten. Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) is a golfer that dares to go against the rules and act untraditional with the game of golf, great humor.

7. He Got Game- Once again another great basketball movie showing the hardships off the court. Ray Allen and Denzel Washington star in a movie featuring a basketball star whose father abandoned him at a young age, and wants back into his life.

6. Remember the Titans Denzel is on the list again, this time as a football coach placed on a team to integrate black coaches. At first racisim is a big problem, but the players overcome that to make an improbable run for to the championship game.

5. Field of Dreams- Who can forget Kevin Costner and his corn field? This movie greatly showed why people played: for the love of the game.

4. Caddyshack- Rodney Dangerfield is always found at the golf course in this flick. Chevy Chase can be found as well, but the most noticeable is Bill Murray chasing his groundhogs. This is a sensational golf comedy.

3. Hoosiers- Gene Hackman takes a fledgling school from Indiana to the title game, in an improbable run. This movie shows how much hard work and determination are valued.

2. Rocky- Slyvester Stallone plays Rocky Balboa and comes out of nowhere to win a heavyweight title. This is a big part of the movie, but the movie also focuses on Rocky's love life, and "Adrianne."

And here is number one.......(drumroll please)

1. Rudy- This movie is the best inspirational story in sports I can find. This true story about a Notre Dame student, thriving to make the football team is the epitome of an underdog story. After working hard in practice for years without being noticed much at all, Rudy's coach promises to let him dress out the last game. However, a new coach comes in and his hopes are shattered... or are they. Rudy gets to dress out and plays in the last game, getting a sack on the last play. Great movie. (RUDY RUDY RUDY)

I hope you have enjoyed my selections, and I am sure that your selections would differ from mine somewhat. These are my fave's, and if you have not seen them I encourage you to watch them.
