Babies Suck

Mar 28 '01

The Bottom Line I feel that pacifiers are a good thing for babies to use. A pacifier can calm a baby down thereby making everyone in the household happy!

Babies naturally feel the need to suck. I don't have a problem with pacifiers, as I think pacifiers are a great way for them to be able to comfort themselves.

If they don't use a pacifier, they will use a thumb or finger. I would rather have our baby use a pacifier than jam his thumb in his mouth and increase the chances of having crooked teeth.

The only drawback is having to go over and put it back in for him if it falls out of his mouth. We think he spits the pacifier out on purpose at times just so we will go over to him. I'm thinking about using Velcro to attach it to his lips!

Seriously, I don't think parents have to worry about all children staying dependent on the pacifier, as our first child quit using hers at around six months of age on her own. She does not suck her thumb either.

I wonder if some babies who are supposedly "colicky" are just in need of a pacifier to suck on to calm themselves down. Why make the baby and yourself suffer if there is a way to quiet the baby and make everyone happy?
