The Audio-Technica Two-Channel Mixer is a great back up piece.
Written: Nov 12 '03
Pros:Great mixer for practicing and playing around on.
Cons:This mixer isn’t a work horse and can't do the big club events.
The Bottom Line: Bottom line this system offers everything a novice DJ will need. Sound quality is average, when compared to my 5-channel mixer.
Choosing a DJ mixer can be a little confusing at first with the various prices of equipment on the market. Common sense says you will not get much of a mixer for under $100.00, but this two-channel mixer is a bona fide bargain. Warning! This mixer is not the top of the line DJ mixer that you have got to purchase today. And you definetly would not purchase it to be used in a club or stadium. Fortunately, the Audio-Technica Two-Channel Audio Mixer is a great back up mixer.
On an average I have used it at least once a month over the past two years primarily for small engagements. The Audio-Technica Two Channel Audio Mixer proper name is the Audiotechnica - AM 150 Two-Channel Audio Mixer. But for the sake of brevity and clarity we can stick with the systems most common name and refer to it as the, "Audio Technica Two-Channel Audio Mixer".
The Audio Technica Two-Channel Audio Mixer is not something that the average Best Buy consumer would purchase. This lightweight 3.86 pound square black unit measures approximately 8.7"W x 7.3"D x 2.0"H and it is the center piece for the DJ system. The Audio-Technica Two-Channel Audio Mixer allows me to navigate through various beautiful house beats and sail through a host of soulful grooves. Although I have used this two-channel stereo mixer with my old magnetic phone turntables, I currently use it with my stereo line-level CD mixer and microphone. One of the best features DJ's will enjoy is the systems "talkover" feature, which lowers the music so announcements and 'shout outs' can be clearly heard by your small audience. Unfortunately you will have to purchase your own microphone since one does not come with the system.
The Audio-Technica Two-Channel Audio Mixer can be referred to as a starter mixer primarily due to its specifications and power. For example, this unit can only handle one DJ Mic 1 mV/45 mV, two magnetic phono at 1 kHz 3 mV/47k ohms, or a combination line of a CD/Tape system. In laymen terms, you can simply hook up the mic and two CD systems or a mic and two phono systems. The front panel XLR-type DJ mic input and the sliding field replaceable cross-fader lever and 4 easy to adjust knobs are easy to use. If you are a novice scratch addict the Audio-Technica Two-Channel Mixer has just the thing to sooth those cravings, with its stereo separation kicking at about 45 dB's with a total stereo output of 100 mV/8 ohms. Once you have connected this mixer, you can wicky-wicky all the records and or CD's you want.
The sleek, black finish, and easy to use outputs mean this is no Fisher Price toy. Although I really don't use the LED meters I do think they make the mixer look nice. The unit has 4 holes for mounting which I don't use since Im not going to permanently mount this into my main system. Using the systems input and output jacks are as easy as 1-2-3 simply read and connect the designated systems to the right port and you'll be mixing in no time.
The Audio Technica Two-Channel Mixer is compact and easy to transport. This is quite a good value even though it is a 2 channel mixer. Overall, this is a good starter mixer that's an ideal back up piece and great for any beginner that is just starting out. Naturally more experienced DJ's will recommend a more advanced system.
Honestly, the Audio Technica Two-Channel Mixer isnt a work horse in fact it doesn't look or feels like a piece of heavy DJ equipment but it won't break apart or let you down. This mixer is fine for practicing on and playing out at small parties and it has all the features you need to spin various types of music. This mixer also lets you listen to each channel in the headphones independently of the main output so that you can beat mix properly. Remember this is a stand alone item so you'll have to purchase headphones and other equipment.
