The Bottom Line Don't get offended when you put someone on your "web of trust," but they don't put you on theirs. Trusting someone requires research, evaluation, and time.
I am fairly new to the epinions community and have just gotten the hang of using my "web of trust." (I got lots of helpful advice from many of your past articles - Thanks!) After writing several opinions, I was very excited when I logged on and found that someone trusted me. It really made my day! However, a couple of days later, after I didn't add this person to my "web of trust," then I was dropped from theirs. How can you trust someone one day but not the next? I was very upset about this because I feel that trusting someone should take careful time & consideration. After I take the time to research someone and their opinions, and add them to my "web of trust," then they would have to really write an offensive article or become inactive for me to remove them. I would never remove someone from my web of trust just because they don't trust me back. Trust is something that you have to earn and in most cases, that just takes time. If you put me on your "web of trust" and I don't respond immediately by putting you on mine, please don't be offended. It doesn't mean that I don't trust you, it just means that I want to evaluate you and your opinions a little longer. If I do put you on my web of trust, it will not be because I am on yours, it will be because I value your opinions and commitment to this website. I encourage all of you to really evaluate a person before you trust them. Watch their activity and their opinions. Don't "trust" them on a whim and then change your mind. That kind of behavior doesn't say very much about your person and it leaves a very bad, lasting impression. |
