Rider Training

Mar 30 '01

The Bottom Line Know Your Limits! Ride Within Your Means! Take a Rider Safety Course!

I taught myself on my father's Honda 550 when I was sixteen (without a license-father almost broke my legs). Took my test when I was 21. I have been riding for over 10 years now. I have owned three bikes, all sportbikes, and I have dropped two of them, but not seriously. I thought I knew all there was to know about motorcycling...

At a recent bike show I signed up to become an instructor with my local DMV as part of the Motorcycle Safety Federation's Safe Rider Training Course (MSF). In the past two months I have learned more about riding than in the last 10 years! I should be an instructor by May 2001.

Sure you will learn how to ride, which is great for the first-time rider, but you will also learn how to avoid dangers and what to do when you can't avoid them. Had I taken this course earlier I have no doubt my two "falls" could have been avoided.

Many insurance companies will offer discounts for passing the course too. $$$

Look for a MSF Rider Safety Course near you at your local Department of Motor Vehicles.
