Zin! Zin! Zin!

Written: Dec 30 '03
The Bottom Line: Great book to teach your child the names of instruments and the names of musical groups.

I signed my son up for an activity club several months ago through www.brightervision.com. In each kit he gets a craft kit, an activity book, a game, a poster and a story book all tried into one theme. This was the book that he got with his kit about musical instruments.

About The Book:

In this book your child will learn the names of instruments like the trombone and learn the sounds that the instruments make. Like with the Trombone, "With mournful moan and silken tone..... Gliding, sliding, high notes go low." With a description like that I can almost hear the Trombone sliding from high notes to low notes. They will also learn about the Trumpet, the French Horn, the Cello, the Violin, the Flute, the Clarinet, The Oboe, the Bassoon and the Harp. Then each page ends by counting the musicians. For example, "One Trombone is playing SOLO." By the end your child will know the names of each group of musicians, all the way up to a group of ten musicians.

What Did I Think Of The Book?

Lloyd Moss is very clever by creating rhymes to keep everything entertaining. Though without Marjoie Priceman's illustrations I don't think the book could stand up on it's own. Priceman has made each musician very wispy and whimsical. Each musician resembles the instrument that they play in one way or another. Like the trombone player is very slender and very tall. To me he appears very sinuous. He looks like every movement he makes, he is gliding and sliding. Something else that Priceman has done is include some really cute animals in the book. Starting with two cats becoming curious by the music. As more musicians come, a mouse becomes interested in the music, then a dog. The animals curiosity turns to enjoyment toward the end of the book. Priceman shows the animals holding hands and dancing to the music. It's absolutely adorable. Priceman also uses very vivid colors that would definitely keep the attention of smaller children, that is if the dancing animals are not enough.

Conclusion:

This book I think would be great for older and younger children. Older children will definitely appreciate the poetic rhyming and the chance to learn about instruments and how to count musician. While the younger child will still probably like the rhyming but love the pictures. If you have a blooming musician in your household this would definitely be a book for them.
