Put on some Chubby Checker. . . We've brought the Stain Stomper

Written: Nov 23 '03
Pros:Convenient, no messy foams or sprays, works fine on fresh spills
Cons:Does not work well on old or set stains
The Bottom Line: Stain Stomper Carpet Spot Remover Towels are average as a cleaner -- no better than most -- but the convenience and less mess are a great feature.

Before we start, I need to say right off the bat that we could not find a picture of the pop-up towels alone. This product IS available by itself or in a kit like the one shown in the picture. Pogomom graciously provided a spot in the database for these towels alone (here), as well as the kit, which can be found here: Stain Stomper Kit. Please notice the database product title of this review is for Stain Stomper Carpet Spot Remover TOWELS.

With a toddler in the house – heck, with a bunch of men I the house – my light beige carpet gets nasty quickly. We had to purchase our own steam cleaner because professional services would break the bank. In between cleanings, we still need something for spills and other spots needing immediate attentions. What I really need is a spot cleaner that will get those stains that manage to sneak by me and I don’t find them until they’re set. And we have a cabinet full of stuff – most of which doesn’t work very well.

For some reason, I’m a sucker for trying new Orange-Glo products. It must be that loud, excited guy with the beard. I guess I subconsciously think if I buy something, he’ll be quiet. Either way, I bought a canister of Stain Stomper Carpet Spot Remover Towels.

Product Description and Claims

Each bright blue and green pop-up canister contains 30 moist towels, measuring 6: X 9 ½”, with a light, pleasant fragrance. The towel are fairly tough – they don’t tear easily – and are textured for better “stain grabbing” ability. Stain Stomper Carpet Spot Remover Towels are intended for use on carpets, floor mats, area rugs, upholstery, car interior, and other types of fabric surfaces.

Stain Stomper Carpet Spot Remover Towels claim to be a “fast-acting, easy-to-use stain remover.” It also claims that one the stain is removed, it keeps working to prevent future stains.

Directions for use are quite simple. For those fresh spills, blot up any excess liquid first. Lay a Stain Stomper towel over the stain. Now twist your foot back and forth over the towel. The grinding actions will scrub carpet fibers from all angles. Repeat if necessary. For more stubborn stains, you may re-moisten the towel with water. When the stain is gone (or you give up), simply discard the towel in the garbage. For upholstery and other spaces otherwise too small to do the twist with your foot, use the same twisting action with your hand.

Caveats

Always test an inconspicuous area for colorfastness before use. Stain Stomper Carpet Spot Remover Towels towels are neither flushable nor intended for use as a personal or animal hygiene tool. Each towel should be discarded after use, and hands should be immediately washed. The product has not been an irritant to my skin, but it could possibly be to others. So, if you have sensitive skin, you may want to wear rubber gloves when using this product. Of course, contact with the eyes should be avoided, though this chance is minimal. If you should happen to get the product in your eyes, flush with water and call your doctor. As with any other cleaner, keep out of reach of children.

Enough of the obvious – Does it work?

Not as well as I had hoped. Stain Stomper Carpet Spot Remover Towels consistently performed poorly on the older, set stains in my carpet, car interior, and my son’s car seat. The best I could get it to do was lighten the stain somewhat. It did, however perform well on plain dirt and mud stains that had already been dried for a while.

I considered the texture of each surface while cleaning, and cannot rule out the possibility this may effect the ability of Stain Stomper Carpet Spot Remover Towels to clean thoroughly. Tighter textures did not seem to clean as well as my carpet with looser texture. Of all the surfaces I tried in my home, not one was negatively impacted or faded.

I can neither confirm nor deny the stain prevention claim is true. I have not noticed any more staining in the small spots I’ve cleaned around the house. Then again, who can remember exactly where they cleaned a quarter-sized splotch of spaghetti sauce?

Stain Stomper Carpet Spot Remover Towels do have some good points, though. Like most spot cleaners, it works well on fresh stains – before they have time to set. It is much more convenient to grab a wipe than it is to grab a spray, gloves, and sponge/brush. Stain Stomper Carpet Spot Remover Towels are not overly moist, so drying time is quite rapid. There is also no “soak time” or need to barricade the spot your just cleaned, either. I find that very appealing because a: I’m lazy, and b: I have a wild toddler in my house, and messy foams are quite undesirable. The convenience of the pop-up wipe is great for travel, too. That wild toddler carries his stain-making habits with him wherever he goes, and it’s good to have a cleaner on hand to clean a mess quickly. Makes one quite the desirable house guest – How lovely would it be to have a guest with a messy child produce their own carpet cleaner and cleaned the kid’s mess on your brand new Berber carpet?

I purchased Stain Stomper Carpet Spot Remover Towels at Wal Mart at an average price of $3.66, but I have also seen it in Albertson’s. These pop-up towels are also available in a kit with a companion spray cleaner on the Great Cleaners web site: http://www.greatcleaners.com.

With Stain Stomper Carpet Spot Remover Towels, the performance is average. It doesn’t work any better than other spot cleaners, but the no-mess, portable convenience makes it a winner for me, and I’ll buy it again. So, put on the Chubby Checker, cause we’ll be twistin’ the stains away with Stain Stomper.

Thanks for the read!
