Found this useful table at CR:

The Element appears a couple hundrdd pounds shy of the class norm, which itself seems a bit low. A 180-pound guy with four similarly large friends could easily overload many of these vehicles.

Excellent point, Bob. I noticed this on the door jamb (trying to estimate curb weight), but somehow it didn't strike me as unusual. It should have. Of course the 2wd will have a higher capacity, but it shoulkd be much higher given the vehicle type.

I'll join the chorus and agree that this is a nice review. However, I'm surprised that you didn't mention the limited cargo capacity of the Element. It's my understanding that this vehicle has a carrying capacity of 675 pounds, including the driver. This rather limits the utility of the vehicle.

Nice review, though!

From researching the 2003, I seem to remember that the EX comes with water-resistant materials throughout the interior, but they're limited to the front seat in the DX (I could be wrong).

As for target market "miscalculation," I heartily concur. Don't think I've seen a single Element being driven by someone without at least a few strands of gray (except a couple of logo-plastered company cars). Perhaps the Element has supplanted the "little red sports car" as a mid-life crisis symbol - at least it's a heck of a lot easier to climb in and out of an Element as your old body stiffens up!

Superb, per usual.
