Re: Keep it on the pavement... (Reply to this comment)

I keep wondering when all of the Sequoia-, Suburban-, H2-, Land Rover-, and Navigator-driving mommies that clog the parking lot of my daughter's school every morning and afternoon will get together and go on safari. Hasn't happened yet.

But for those who do actually go off-road, I totally see the point of a true SUV.

Keep it on the pavement... (Reply to this comment)

Being one of the small group of people who actually use their 4WD truck and SUV for off-pavement trips, I deplore the development of so-called 'modern' SUV-like vehicles such as the Hyundai, that are marketed to those interested yet inexperienced in traveling the path less taken to remote areas. These vehicles are indeed comfortable on the road, but have been so emasculated by governmental and consumer demand that they are no longer capable of rough off-pavement travel.

Perhaps that is what the majority wants, but don't be deluded into thinking that these vehicles are capable of serious off-road use. The truck frame criticized for is weight is less likely to crack, and keeps the body and chassis components better protected from damage. The live axles derided as so inimicable to good pavement ride are sturdy as hell and provide great potential suspension articulation.

Just to let you know... (Reply to this comment)

1) You said you didn't now about the gear ratios in the five-speed auto transmission. I happen to have the 2004 Santa Fe brochure here with me, and it says that with the optional 3.5 liter V6 engine, the final drive ratio is 3.684. The 2.7 liter V6 engine has a final drive ratio of 4.52 (automatic with full-time 4WD) and 4.32 (automatic with front wheel drive). The base model with front wheel drive (manual) is 4.56 and (automatic) 4.52. Couldn't find the ratios of the other gears, sorry.

2) It seems more and more people love their Santa Fe's because there's a whole web forum dedicated to this SUV, www.santafeforum.net. I signed up even though my family doesn't own one (my username is Excellerator on the site).

Hope this has helped. Excellent review!

Very Good Review (Reply to this comment)

I thought your review was very informative. It gives the reader a good idea of what the Santa Fe is about. I just disagree with the part about the Santa Fe being ugly. I just bought a 2004 last week and I have been checking them out for the past couple of years. I think it has the coolest looking small SUV body style on the road today. But hey, we all like something different, right? Thankfully, they did make the Santa Fe different from the rest for those of us who are bored with all the clones out there. I'll write a review on my baby as soon as I have had a chance to drive it a while. :)

Re: Chevrolet equinox remark? (Reply to this comment)

A five-speed automatic should help the engine out. Chevrolet is claiming it'll get to sixty in 8.5 seconds. I would be surprised if a stronger engine was not available in the future, though.

Room for the driver? (Reply to this comment)
by Slavewoman
We just bought an '04 after test driving an '03. My husband absolutely HATES this vehicle because he says the driver's leg room and seating position has changed drastically (he's 6'2"). Has anyone else experienced this?

Chevrolet equinox remark? (Reply to this comment)
by jpmashu
Many thanks for your excellent review! Like always it is very well done. However I have a question mark about your remark regarding the new chevrolet equinox SUV: it use the same old 3.4 l V6 engine having 185 hp that exist since so many years. I would have like to see the Honda V6 engine used in 2004 Saturn Vue. I just hope that old engine fit better the new equinox than other cars!

I said the 2.7 was adequate. Some people want more than that.

Good comparison review (Reply to this comment)

I appreciate, as I'm sure most will, the capsule comparisons between the Santa Fe and it's contenders. Very informative, and, while I consider the 2.7 liter to be perfectly adequate with 4WD, your observations are very balanced and fair.
