Tell it like it is... (Reply to this comment)
by Paladia
Again, a great review. I must comment on the way you described the CompUSA computers (or was that Compaq you were talking about? Same thing). I recently worked in a build-your-own computer store, sharing showroom space (as a concession in a military BX) with the standard run-of-the-mill Compaqs...and had to explain our higher-priced but better quality products just as you did in this article. It was hard to get folks to understand at times.
I've been away from the US for 3 years and would love the chance to shop at CompUSA, but after reading this I will be more cautious when I finally get the chance.
Thanx.

Re: As another former CUSA employee... (Reply to this comment)

It has been over a year since I worked for CompUSA but I have a few friends still there. From what they tell me, it is exactly the same as when I left. Sales associates as CompUSA are following the guidelines set by the management and that is where the real problems lie (no pun intended). We can't really be upset with the sales people who are trying to make a living, after all they are making money the only way CompUSA will let them - by selling the warranties, services, training and not the product best suited for the customers needs.

As another former CUSA employee... (Reply to this comment)
by caradoc
...I can only say that I haven't shopped there in about five years - and I only went into the stores to check on how they were merchandising our product.
It's refreshing to know that not only are things still as bad as when I left, they've actually gotten worse. This supports my theory on "retail entropy," where the employees know little about the products, and leave for higher-paying jobs as soon as they learn something. Each successive generation of employees knows less and less, while becoming more and more concerned about their spiffs than customer satisfaction.

Both of my sons worked for CompUSA, one in sales
and the other in management. I have shipped
your review on for their perspective.
Nice job!

Fabricated Sales Receipts (Reply to this comment)
by viper1963
A friend of mine who works for a major Japanese electronics manufacturer told me his company no longer trusts CompUSA™ whenever they send equipment in for service they always include a phoney sales receipt.
Secondly, they once supposedly sold their employees certain digital cameras way below cost. The equipment was obviously broken and a whole slew of these units came into my friend's company for service.
They tried to contact a CompUSA manager but no manager ever called back to resolve the issue.
CompUSA is one of a small handful of retail stores that are known for unethical standards. I never buy my computer accessories from CompUSA.
Great insider review!

I don't know why... (Reply to this comment)

but the service people at CompUSA are rarely helpful to me. It seems that they are always helping someone else or in the middle of something. I have the hardest time finding an available salesperson and often end up leaving the store with nothing. I enjoyed your opinion. --Lokino :)
