Are you tired of paying for the box and shrink wrap? I know I am. We have too much trash on this planet, and companies seem intent on drowning us all in a sea of tissue paper and foam dividers. Those gift boxes with perfume and powder may look cute and may wrap up easier, but someone ends up hauling all that waste away and putting it somewhere and hopefully not in the lot next to mine. To add insult to this injury, you (the consumer) end up getting very little product for the money spent. This is a big lose/lose situation, and its time that someone said enough.
With that rant out of my system, I do have good news. Bulk Foods online does get the picture, and they send you what you order without adding pounds and pounds of throwaway boxing and packing. You get food that you pay for, and thats it.
The big draw at Bulk Foods is the candy (at least, thats what caught my eye to start with). They have all kinds of sweet stuff including some of the old candies like rock candy, Mary Janes, and gum balls. They also have chocolates and sugar free selections. If you dont like sweets, then they have crackers, trail mix, nuts, spices, and supplements.
Things are organized well. You can look in categories (bulk foods or bulk candy) or by special groupings like spicy or holiday. They have sections like healthy snacks and sugar free which help when you have to or want to get specialty items.
My favorite item at Bulk Foods is the chocolate turtle candies. If you like those, then you know that they are expensive. You get a big box and just get a few candies. The ones at the stores all have those plastic trays that are mostly tray and not much candy in them. At Bulk Foods, you can buy them in bulk and get a lot of candy for a good price. They call them Milk Chocolate Pecan Caramel Patties, but these are turtles. The price for 5 pounds is a little over $25.
My family could easily eat 5 pounds of turtles, but I like to get them in bulk at holidays and divide them in my own containers. We used to buy boxes of turtles for several family members who love those. Now, we get the bulk food box and pack them for family members. Everyone gets more candy, and we pay less too. Cant beat that.
The wrapped candies work out for Halloween or for class parties especially if you have more than one child needing to buy for classmates, Scouts, ball teams and such.
Another really good buy is the trail mix with several options depending on your tastes or if you want high energy or low calorie. Buy that in the big sealed bag and then divide it out in your own baggies.
Im still looking at some of the spices. The prices are great, but the sizes are large. Im thinking that Ill pass the word with family members. When we have several families needing a certain spice, then we can split the price and the spices. I hope that everyone will run out of bay leaves soon, because I just used my last one.
In some categories, you can buy a small amount and decide if you want to buy in bulk. Ill add on a new item in the small test size with an order to see if I want to buy the bulk size. The packing is $4.95 no matter the size of the order, so it works out to add some of the test packs to your favorites and see what you think. The only one I got and did not really like is the sugar free taffy. The idea is good, but I think taffy must need sugar to taste good at our house. If you need sugar free, then I would not rule these out. Were just not big on the lite foods in general.
If you order from bulk foods, then they are quick with the orders. They send the items out with minimal packing but enough to ensure that they travel fine. My last order arrived in 4 days. The trail mix was bagged in a sturdy plastic bag sealed tight, and the turtles came in a large white box with paper between layers of pure chocolate candies.
Many of the items are brand names that youll recognize. In cases where the items are named generically, they taste like the higher priced versions at the store. The only real difference is that you pay less and get more. Plus, they dont trash up the planet with all kinds of extra packaging. If you have even one creative bone in your body, then you wrap these up for giving. If not, then just pig out.
