Web Pages people come back to!

Mar 31 '01

The Bottom Line Every homepage should be different and creative. That is what makes people coming back!

When building your own homepage or website, the only thing I can stress is be original! There's nothing worse than going to yet another flower page that is exactly the same as every other one on the web. Surely you can find some other angle.

I guess the same thing could be said for this category. Most people will be talking about basic HTML tips, but really, there is more to a web page. Content. That is the most important part of any web page. Sure, you can have some great html, fonts, and colors, but when it all boils down, you need to have something interesting.

Another great part of a successful web page, is the variety. Sure, make a homepage, but also have a message board (chatting rooms on a homepage are only successful if you get an incredibly high amount of traffic, other wise, the chat rooms are usually empty) a voting section, pictures, and information about your home town. When making a web page, visit other web pages for ideas. Don't steal the ideas, but rather adapt them to your own ideas, and add your own creativity.

Other ideas for topics on your website could be journal entries, and rant & rave section when you just talk about things that irritate you, important news (this could be things that affect you, such as Napster, or a local kitty murderer that was caught, or a play by play until he is.) horoscopes, quizzes, and a list of web sites that you like.

There are many ways to increase traffic to your web sites, once you have constructed your page. You can list it in the Epinions Web Site category (to do this, you must be an Epinions member) or put it in a Yahoo search category. Joining web page groups is also a great idea. You will put a link to the group page on your web page, and will get random views from other members of the group. Add your web page URL to your signature at the bottom of your emails. Give your web page address to your friends and family. Word will eventually get around.

Here are a few Web Page Don'ts!

* Don't copy other people's web page and graphics unless it specifically says you can, or unless you write to the web page constructor and ask permission. You don't want your new page torn down or be charged with plagarism. You can always ask, a lot of web page contructors are flattered that you'd like to use one of their graphics.

* Don't list your real address. I wouldn't even list my real name, but to each his own. But never EVER give out your real address, or phone number, or other important pieces of information. I'm not saying that that you have to lie about your family members either, especially if you have a diary. But ficticious names and cities work well to thwart perverts.

* Don't just have ONE page to your web page. Have sections, learn a bit of HTML (you can find snip-its in other reviews around Epinions) and make tables so that you can forward people to other areas of your page. HTML isn't that hard - well, basic HTML anyway!

Good luck in building a web page. I hope my ideas have been different and helpful!
