cntaur5's Full Review: Sony MDR-V700DJ MDR-V700DJ Studio Monitor Series D...
The Gear:
Ask any DJ worth his or her salt and they will quickly tell you that having good headphones goes hand in hand with having a good microphone. If you are working the turntables and taking request you definetly want to have the ability to speak to the audience and hear your music. Sony has stepped to the plate offering DJs the Sony MDR-V700DJ Studio Monitor (DJ) Headphones.
The Sony MDR-V700DJ Studio Monitor (DJ) Headphones have a nice silver finish with swiveling padded earcups. The headphones also have Neodymium magnets, 50mm drivers, and 3000 mW power handling. Sometimes called earth magnets, the neodymium magnets are stronger than regular ferrite magnet. The 50mm drivers usually mean you get a deep bass sound and the 3000 mW power handling means these headphones are designed to handle more stringent use, lasting longer and standing up to day-in, day-out use at very high output levels. The headphones detachable 10 feet (3m) cord is copper with a gold plated plug.
The Claim:
According to the manufacturers marketing statement, All Sony Studio Monitor Series Headphones incorporate high-end materials and advanced engineering, to deliver critically clean, exceptionally clear sound for professional and high fidelity applications. Can Sony really say that all of their headphones deliver?
My Experience:
For the past eight months Ive used the Sony MDR-V700DJ Studio Monitor (DJ) Headphones intermittently with my Numark D100 Single Cup Headphone". The Sony head phones work just as good as my Numark when cueing up for the next track. Now I have two head pieces with the Sony getting a clear, crispy full audio sound. The lightweight 10.6 oz headphones rest well on the ears with the unit being in perfect distance from the ear canal and the outer portion of the ear. The headphones weight is distributed evenly when covering both ears sitting well on my head. The swiveling earcups are great for mixing and single-sided monitoring when working the system. The copper cord works well with no static or feedback and the gold plated plug has remained corrosion free hooking into the system with ease. The 10 feet (3m) copper cord offers all the length I need to move around. The design, look and feels of the headphones are nice.
The headphones are easy to carry and store. In fact the folding design permits convenient storage with the rest of my equipment. Some DJs use the serrated area on the plug as a hanger for the headphones when its plugged into their equipment, but I dont want to damage my equipment or the jack since my complete system cost more than the headphones.
The only down side to using these headphones is the same with all of my professional headphones. Naturally with all headphones there is going to be perspiration, however the amount depends on how long you wear them and your bodys rate of perspiring.
Inside Scoop:
In the world of high end DJ equipment, youll discover that it is the sound that matters. The qualities of Sonys more expensive headphones are primarily intended for DJs is impressive. The sound of the MDR-V700DJ Studio Monitor (DJ) Headphones is clean, clear and they work well with my system. I especially like the auto return swivel mechanism in the headphones. Its fantastic for bringing the earcups back to standard listening position with ease. The headphones have become more comfortable now that they are broken in.
