| babe4289's Full Review: Sony PlayStation 2 Slimline Console |
Well just what we need something else to waist all our money on. I do have to admit the Playstation2 does more than just rot your children's mind. In my case its my husband's mind. If you're willing to dish out $350 big ones for the console another $35 for the memory card and $20 for another controller seeing that it only comes with one, then you are on your way to a good investment.
My husband bought this without telling me and I just about had a heart attack when he told me how much he paid for it. As he started telling me about it he mentioned that it played DVD movies and CD's then I started to change my mind about it. We were planning on buying a second DVD player for my son's room anyways. Just be careful when buying DVD movies some may not work properly or they won't work at all on the PS2. You might want to rent it first just to be sure it plays. The DVD movies that will play on the PS2 are the ones that have the NTSC designation. You can also use your controller as the remote.
I'm not to sure how much better the game playing part is compared to the PS1. The PS2 games have much better graphics. The only problem is that there are very few PS2 games out right now. They range anywhere from $30 to $60 dollars. Unlike other systems, when something new comes out all of your old stuff goes to waist. Not with the PS2, you can play your PS1 games on the PS2. So the only thing going to waist is your PS1 console. The same thing that happens with the DVD movies happens to the PS1 games. They don't work properly or they play differently on the PS2.
The PS2 comes with the console, one dual shock analog controller, an av cable, an ac power cord, and of course the manual. Any other extras you'll have to dig up some more money. A few popular extras are the multitap, which lets more than two people play, that runs about $35 dollars. If you get that then you will probably need extra controllers and they range anywhere from $15 to $40 dollars. There is also a vertical and horizontal stand for the console.
There is a 90 day limited warranty. Don't bother taking your PS2 back to the store if there is anything wrong because there is nothing they can do. You will have to call SONY to get instructions on what to do to get it repaired or replaced. Keep your receipt they'll want to see that you haven't went over your 90 days.
SONY also has a website you can visit to find out the latest news or to see what new games and products they are coming out with. You can visit them at www.scea.com. If you have any question, installation problems, or need technical support you can call at 800-345-SONY. They also have a hint line to call for hints on games, but that will cost you too.
For automated hints it is $.95 per minute, to talk to a person will cost you $1.40 per minute. To have your hints sent to you in the mail will be anywhere from $6.95 to $16.95 and for $5.00 to $20.00 you can get a card refresh.
It is very easy to maintain your PS2. Check your front and rear vents to be sure they are clear of dust. If you do notice some dust you can easily just vacuum it off.
I really wasn't sure about getting the PS2. When I saw people standing in line for hours I thought they were absolutely crazy. Well my husband didn't have to wait, he found ours at KB Toys they only had two left. We didn't purchase the PS2 when it first came out, I wish we would have because even though we didn't have to wait in line we had to pay more. If you reserved your PS2 in advance it was only $300 and we had to pay $350. I think it was worth it though, not only will your kids love it but you'll get use out of it too. So as soon as you find your money tree I'd recommend you get one too. That is if you can find any available.
