No heresy. That's pretty much the way it is if you prefer a direct, precise feel to the major controls over refinement.

I wasn't aware that we had established national schools of automotive styling, either. I've just always figured that it's the advertising department's job to insert the word "European" somewhere in their product blurb to imply some sort of desirability. Seems to be a requisite marketing tactic, whether they're selling cars, clothes, or cutlery.

In any case, I found this review spot-on. I just test-drove a Ralliart the other day and absolutely loved it. I'm in the process of selling my Eclipse GT now and this car is at the top of my list for its replacement. Either that or the new Mazda3 hatchback. I actually found the Mitsu considerably more (forgive me) "zoom-zoom"... better acceleration, steering, shifter, clutch, and suspension than the 3...is that heresy? If it weren't for the Ralliart's undistinguished looks, there'd be no contest.

Anyway, thanks for the review!

"Said to be European-inspired." Said by whom? By Mitsubishi's PR, no doubt.

Whenever I read "said to be" with no actual attribution my B.S. detector lights up. It's a stock phrase generally implying that no one really thinks it.

Even if the Lancer's styling was inspired by BMW's styling--Mitsu has certainly cribbed BMW's designs in the past--so what? If I created a painting inspired by [insert name of your favorite artist here], how much would you pay for it?

At any rate, the Lancer's styling is thoroughly uninspired.

Hmmm...

Quote from Cars.com:

"The Lancer’s styling is said to be European-inspired. The interior provides excellent visibility. The sedan’s cab-forward profile incorporates a high roofline on a comparatively long, 102.4-inch wheelbase. It measures 177.6 inches long overall and stands approximately 54.1 inches tall. Compared to the Mirage coupe that it replaces, the Lancer is 9.5 inches longer overall and has a wheelbase that is 7.3 inches longer."

Copied German styling? You've totally lost me here, dude.

To begin with, we have three totally different looking cars here. I don't care if they all copied whatever "German styling" might be.

Which brings up my next source of confusion: what is "German styling?" I have no idea what you would mean by that term at this point in time as it applies to automobiles.

Do you mean Audi, BMW, and Mercedes styling? They all look different.

Do you mean they look like cars that might have been produced by German companies? Well, VW is a German company. So I would expect the Jetta to have "German styling." Ford of Germany is also a German company. It developed the Focus, so I would expect that car to also have "German styling."

Now the Lancer, I see hardly any styling there at all. So whatever they copied (Mercedes from ten years ago?) they didn't copy much of it. Mazda clearly knocked off Mercedes for the Protege, and the Lancer looks somewhat like the Protege, but in general Mitsubishi doesn't do to well with nuance. They do two things: bland and tastelessly outrageous.

You seem to like the look of the Focus and Jetta. Both copied German styling. I read that the Mitsubishi also did this for the Lancer.

You knew this prior to disparaging its look, right?

I was on the verge of asking you to check out the Lancer, as I'm thinking of purchasing one down the road, but you erased my need to do that. I've been to the dealer, but I didn't get to take it for a drive (I avoid dealing with salespeople until I'm close to making a purchase), so you've given me a good idea of how it does on the road.

As usual, great review!
