Best Sports Movies Ever

Apr 01 '01

The Bottom Line Here are some of the best sports movies ever, enjoy!

This is a review of my all time favorite sports movies, I will try to include movies about different sports, and hopefully some that you have never seen. I hope you enjoy the review.

(Victory) The first of my selections is the movie Victory which is the only movie about Soccer on my list, and actually its the only good soccer movie I have ever seen.
This is the story of Allied prisoners of War during World War Two who for a soccer team and challenge the Germans to a match as a plot to escape from the POW camp. The film features Micheal Caine, and Sylvester Stallone, as well as a number of real professional Soccer players including the Great Pele (Brazil) Bobby Moore (England) and Osvaldo Ardiles (Argentina). If you like soccer you will love this movie, and even if you are not a huge soccer fan you should enjoy the inspirational ending.

(Hoosiers) This is my pick for the best serious Basketball movie ever. Gene Hackman stars as a Highschool basketball coach in Indiana, trying to get his team to play his style of ball, while coming in conflict with players, and parents. Great basketball scenes in this one.

(White Me Can't Jump) Street Basketball movie with Welsly Snipes, and Woody Harrleson. This film takes a look at the world of street ball with all of its trash talking, and showboating. Great oneliners, and chemistry between Snipes and Harrleson. All of the extras who play ball in the movie are real players, and not actors, and this gave th emovie more of a sence of realism, and it really looked like snipes and harrleson could play too, or else it was some darn good editing.

(Slapshot) I only saw this movie for the first time the other night, and I really enjoyed it. Paul Newman stars in the comedy about a a minor league hockey team coping with a losing season, and the possibility of the team shutting down. The team starts employing some pretty violent tactics to win games, and the action turns pretty ugly with a lot of fighting, and blood, but overall this is a comedy, and very funny. Paul Newman gives a good performance, and can skate really well, I was impressed.

(The Natural) My favorite Serious Baseball Movie. Stars Robert Redford, and has an incredible Score, and some really cool shots, such as closeups of the baseball flying through the air. Famous for its fireworks at the end, this is the Baseball film.

(Bull Durham) Stars Kevin Costner, Tim Robbins, and Susan Surandan. Film follows a minor League Baseball team, and its two stars, the Veteran Catcher played by Costner, and the hot rookie pitcher played by Robbins. Costners job is to teach Robbins what he needs to know to make it to the majors. This is a comedy, and has quite a bit of adult material in it, not reccomended for those under 13 or so, but it does have an R rating, so see it first, and then decide if its appropriate for your child.

Victory, Hoosiers, and the Natural are for all audiences, while the others have some possibly objectionable material.

I hope you like my review, I know there are a lot of movies I did not include, but maybe I will write another review soon, and include such great films as Rocky, Raging Bull, and maybe I will finally see a good American Football movie one day, and I will be able to include that too.
